COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Blue Jackets are poised to execute their final significant off-season move.
On Thursday, the team received confirmation that veteran winger Patrik Laine had been cleared by the NHL/NHLPA players’ assistance program, a facility he entered in late January for mental health reasons.
The most encouraging news is that Laine, 26, has been deemed fit to resume his NHL career. Although participation in this program is voluntary, a player cannot exit until they have received approval from the program’s medical professionals.
General manager Don Waddell has been actively reshaping the Columbus roster since his hiring in late May and searching for a new coach. He mentioned that multiple NHL teams have shown interest in acquiring Laine but wish to consult with him first.
With this clearance, those discussions can now begin. Beyond addressing his mental health progress, interested teams will also inquire about Laine’s recovery from off-season shoulder surgery.
It is anticipated that additional clubs will express interest given Laine’s recent clearance.
Last season saw Laine in just 18 games, recording 6 goals and 3 assists for a total of 9 points with a minus-10 rating. He suffered a broken clavicle on December 14 against Toronto and was preparing to return when he announced his entry into the assistance program on January 28.
Shortly after his enrollment in the program, Laine shared on social media:
“After careful consideration and discussions with my support network and the team, I have recognized the importance of prioritizing my mental health and well-being. Hockey has been my passion and my life; however I realize that to perform at my best it is essential I take this time for myself. I deeply appreciate the understanding and support from my team, the League, and our fans during this period. I look forward to returning to ice with clarity of mind and renewed energy. Thank you for respecting my privacy during this time as well as your continued support. With love, Patty.”
This spring marked another turning point as Laine communicated to the Blue Jackets his desire for a “change of scenery.”
Waddell expressed intentions of executing a “hockey trade” involving Laine—aiming to secure an everyday player without significant salary retention requirements—which proves more challenging at this advanced stage of pre-season when many teams have solidified their lineups.
- There are two primary obstacles:
• Laine’s contract runs for two more years at an $8.7 million annual salary cap hit—making it financially burdensome for many clubs at present.
• His contract contains a limited no-trade clause allowing him to exclude ten NHL teams from any potential trade list; however it remains uncertain if he would be amenable to altering that list considering his intention to leave Columbus could necessitate such flexibility.
SincEt trading TO COLUMBUS along with Jack Roslovic on January 23rd ,2021 , LAINE HAS AMASSED A STATISTIC OF64-74-138 WITH A MINUS -58 RATING IN A TOTAL OF174 GAMES . HE ALSO MISSED123 GAMES DUE TO INJURIES OR SICKNESS AND HAS NEVER PLAYED MORE THAN56 GAMES WITHIN ANY SINGLE SEASON
The hope was that signing Johnny Gaudreau during last summer’s off-season would reignite Laine’s skills as an elite goal-scorer; regrettably though they played together regularly both as linemates & powerplay units they’ve never quite connected.n In fact over these past two seasons Gaudreau provided only six primary assists outta’ Laines’28 GOALS .
The transformation underway within The Blue Jackets organization carries weighty significance—witness several exits (Jake Bean , Adam Boqvist , Alex Nylander & Alexandre Texier), notable free agent adds (Center Sean Monahan plus defenseman Jack Johnson) all culminating amid appointing anew coach! n Recently Minnesota Wilds laidout Dean Evason GOT THE nod Monday following Pascal Vincent’s dismissal after merely one year onboard!

The Impact of Laine’s Return
Laine’s abilities as a scorer and playmaker are well-documented, making him a valuable asset for any team. With his return from injury, the Columbus Blue Jackets have a unique opportunity to leverage his skills in trade talks. Practical Tips for Managing Trade Talks
As the Columbus Blue Jackets navigate trade discussions, it’s essential for management to execute a well-thought-out strategy. Here are some practical tips:
1. Assess Team Needs
Before making any decisions, the Blue Jackets should evaluate their current roster to identify specific needs. This assessment will help guide discussions with potential trade partners.
2. Monitor Market Trends
Understanding the current market and what other teams are looking for can provide a competitive edge in negotiations.
3. Keep Communication Open
Maintaining transparent communication with Laine and his representatives will be crucial. If he knows the team is invested in his future, it can foster goodwill regardless of the outcome.
Case Study: Successful Trades Involving Star Players
Looking at successful trades involving star players can provide insight into how the Blue Jackets might approach the situation with Laine. Here are a few notable examples:
