THOMPSON, Conn. — In a flawless performance, Patrick Emerling secured team owner Rich Gautreau his maiden NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour win on Wednesday night at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park.
Emerling not only posted the fastest times in both practice and qualifying while driving Gautreau’s No. 1 Fleetworks Inc. Modified, but he also led every lap of the Thompson 150, marking his first victory in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour in nearly three years.
With this win, Emerling has become the seventh different driver to win consecutively in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour across as many events.
Confident in his team’s performance leading up to Wednesday’s race, Emerling felt a victory was on the horizon but expressed pleasant surprise at their execution that evening.
“We’ve had a dominant car over the last three races and have been building momentum,” Emerling stated. “This being our first year racing as a team, we performed pretty well at [Thompson]. That was probably the fastest car I’ve ever driven in my life, and it’s incredible to finally earn a win at Thompson.”
Justin Bonsignore, who trailed Ron Silk by a single point in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour standings before Wednesday, attempted to close the gap on Emerling in the final laps but ultimately finished second. He praised Gautreau and Emerling for their dominant vehicle, admitting he needed to improve his own Modified to compete for the lead.
“[Emerling’s] car was exceptionally strong,” Bonsignore commented. “If I could have started near the front, track position might have made a difference. We were beginning to catch him with 15 to go, but I got caught up in lapped traffic more than he did, and my rear tires gave out. it was a good night for us.”
Bonsignore’s second-place finish, combined with Silk’s seventh-place result, allowed him to take the lead in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour standings for the first time this season, with a four-point advantage over Silk and six races remaining.
Craig Lutz finished third at Thompson on Wednesday, followed by Jon McKennedy and Tommy Catalano in the top five.
The final results:
Patrick Emerling, Justin Bonsignore, Craig Lutz, Jonathan McKennedy, Tommy Catalano, Matt Swanson, Ron Silk, Austin Beers, Trevor Catalano, Eric Goodale, Andrew Krause, Tyler Rypkema, Anthony Sesely, Tim Connolly, Woody Pitkat, Doug Coby, Andy Jankowiak, Roger Turbush, Tyler Catalano, Ken Heagy, Dave Sapienza, Matt Hirschman, Steven Kopcik, Kyle Bonsignore, Chase Dowling, Jake Johnson.
