A visit to City Hall reveals an array of posters, signs, and memorabilia honoring the city’s pride and joy. Near the exhibition area are posters documenting Ohtani’s pursuit of a season with 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases, with a city employee diligently updating stats each morning. A replica of Ohtani’s hand is also available for visitors to shake.
This location serves as the headquarters for the Shohei Ohtani Cheer Squad, which is spearheaded by the city’s mayor, Jun Kuranari.
The cheer squad was established in 2018 when Ohtani joined the Angels, uniting 10 groups and businesses to rally behind the star and showcase their local pride. As Ohtani’s fame has soared, breaking MLB records and leading the Dodgers to the World Series, the squad’s membership has expanded dramatically, currently boasting an impressive 259 groups.
“This includes prominent companies, Shohei Ohtani’s middle school, as well as many small businesses throughout the city,” said Tomonori Toriumi, the cheer squad’s spokesperson, during a Zoom call translated by MLB Japan’s Sho Kurematsu. Toriumi, part of the Lifelong Learning and Sports Promotion Division at City Hall, serves as an effective voice for this vast community of passionate Ohtani supporters.
The cheer squad has crafted special Japanese wind chimes, known as fuurin, in honor of Ohtani and has produced commemorative stickers recognizing his achievements, including his 50/50 season and consecutive years leading both the American League and now the National League in home runs.
“We created 2,000 stickers,” Toriumi mentioned, referring to the latest batch, “and they were all gone within the first three hours.”
This enthusiasm extends beyond City Hall. The spirit of support for Ohtani permeates the entire town, whether it be banks, restaurants, or other organizations. A local rice paddy is designed to reflect Ohtani’s likeness, and on the 17th of each month, residents proudly wear shirts or jerseys displaying his iconic No. 17.
Even school lunches celebrate the superstar.
“They creatively incorporate Ohtani’s two-way feature into school lunch menus for middle and elementary school students,” Toriumi explained.
While Oshu proudly claims a unique bond with the superstar, Ohtani’s fanbase stretches worldwide. A quick glance at social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram reveals ardent supporters from all backgrounds. His jersey sales are among the top in the league, and broadcasts of the games ensure to spotlight when Ohtani is up to bat.
Baseball players aren’t
No one is immune to the Ohtani fandom. From Aaron Judge of the Yankees, who referred to him as “the best player in the game,” to a member of the Czech Republic national baseball team, each participant expressed anticipation of facing Ohtani during last spring’s World Baseball Classic.
In South Korea, there’s a passionate group of Shohei Ohtani superfans known as Shotime Korea. Established by Jae-ik Lee, a radio producer, broadcaster, and author, the group has grown to 770 members who frequently share their thoughts, experiences, and memorabilia on Naver Cafe. More than 40 members recently gathered at Incheon International Airport, holding banners and signs that read “Goatani” in hopes of receiving a smile or greeting from Ohtani when the Dodgers arrived for the season-opening Seoul Series.
“During the baseball season, we meet at pubs or sports bars to cheer together,” Lee shared with MLB.com in an email. “The airport welcoming event was one of the highlights of our fan club. Someone (I can’t recall who) suggested, ‘What if we all go to the airport to welcome Shohei and the Dodgers?’ and everyone agreed. We held several meetings and assigned roles.”
As the group’s leader, Lee stands out when it comes to memorabilia. His “museum” is filled not only with cards, jerseys, and game-worn equipment, but also with Hugo Boss suits, reflecting Ohtani’s role as a brand ambassador. Additionally, he purchased a Porsche Taycan in the same color as the one Ohtani gifted to Joe Kelly after they swapped jersey numbers.
“When Ohtani entered my life, I embraced this feeling, much like one embraces a religion,” Lee told the LA Times earlier this year. “I found peace. I accepted that maybe I wasn’t meant for something greater; instead, I could find fulfillment in supporting Ohtani and his remarkable accomplishments.”
What ignited Lee and his group’s fascination with Ohtani goes beyond his on-field achievements: It’s his demeanor, his intense concentration, rigorous self-discipline, the traditions he adheres to, and the consideration he shows to others that distinguish him from other sports icons. (It certainly doesn’t hurt that for some members of the fan club, Ohtani’s “handsome face and Greek god-like physique” serves as additional motivation, according to Lee.)
It’s these selfless and humble traits that have also brought Ohtani to Canadian classrooms through Ohtani Canada, the official Canadian fan club.
Indeed, in a nation where Ohtani neither resides nor regularly plays, an entire fan club dedicated to him exists.
