SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — A nightclub roof collapse in the Dominican Republic has claimed the lives of dozens, including former Major League Baseball pitcher Octavio Dotel. The disaster occurred during a concert, leaving a wake of devastation and grief.
Octavio Dotel, 51, a veteran of 13 MLB teams and a World Series champion with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2011, was among those killed when the roof of the “Jet Set” nightclub in Santo Domingo collapsed. News of his death was confirmed to The Associated press by Satosky Terrero, a spokesperson for the Dominican republic’s professional baseball league, after initial reports indicated he had been rescued.
Dotel had a remarkable 15-year career and holds the record (from 2012-2019) for playing with the most MLB teams. He retired in 2014 after playing for the Detroit Tigers.
Tony Blanco, who played one season in MLB and eight years in Japan, also died in the collapse. Among the deceased is Nelsy Cruz, sister of former MLB player Nelson Cruz and governor of Monte Cristi province. “We extend our deepest condolences to the families and friends of all those affected, as well as to our colleague Nelson and his entire family,” said MLB Commissioner rob Manfred in a statement.
The collapse during a performance by merengue singer Rubby Pérez resulted in at least 79 fatalities and 155 injuries. Authorities are investigating the cause of the disaster.
