This season, the Columbus Blue Jackets will not be alone in commemorating Johnny Gaudreau. The NHL announced on Monday that all 32 teams will pay tribute to Johnny and his brother, Matthew, with special helmet decals at the commencement of the 2024-25 season.
The decals will prominently display the letter “G” in the center, representing the brothers’ last name, with No. 13 (Johnny’s number) to the left and No. 21 (Matthew’s number) to the right. These decals will be worn from the start of the regular season on Friday until the last home opener between the Los Angeles Kings and the San Jose Sharks on October 24 in Los Angeles.
The Gaudreau brothers tragically lost their lives after being hit by a car while riding bicycles in suburban New Jersey on August 29.
The Blue Jackets had previously shared their plans to honor the brothers with a sticker on the team’s helmets and a No. 13 patch on both their home and away jerseys. General manager Don Waddell also mentioned that the team would preserve Gaudreau’s locker stall in the dressing room and take his No. 13 sweater on the road to ensure his presence in visiting locker rooms.
Candlelight vigils were held by the Blue Jackets and the Calgary Flames, where Johnny, 31, played for nine seasons before his final two with Columbus. In addition, NHL teams recognized the brothers with a video tribute prior to their preseason games. Matthew, 29, had a five-season career in professional hockey spanning the AHL, ECHL, and Sweden.
The New Jersey Devils and Buffalo Sabres are scheduled to kick off the season on Friday at O2 Arena in Prague, wearing these special decals. Players from the Sabres donned the helmet decals during Monday’s practice in Prague.
The regular season will begin in North America on October 8.
“I think it’s an incredible tribute to an incredibly sad situation,” Sabres coach Lindy Ruff told NHL.com. “As a league and as a team, we must find ways to honor these individuals for their contributions to the game.”
