This idea was first launched in the 1980s by a company named Louisville, which ran an advertising campaign showcasing a football helmet transforming into the HelmetHat™.

If you’re a fan of ball caps, note that this is a New Era 9FIFTY model, which features a snapback design with an adjustable closure at the back rather than a fitted style (59FIFTY), like the caps worn by MLB players on the field. Even if you typically favor fitted caps (there are certainly people who do — I’m one of them, size 7 1/2 if you’re curious), New Era has included an appealing little tag/helmet design on the rear of each helmet hat.
