New England Patriots Release Quarterbacks Ian Book and Matt Corral
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – In a surprising move, the New England Patriots have announced the release of quarterback Ian Book from the practice squad and quarterback Matt Corral from the exempt/left squad.
Ian Book’s Journey
The 25-year-old Ian Book was signed by the New England Patriots to the practice squad on September 13, 2023. Book, who was originally drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the fourth round (133rd overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft out of Notre Dame, made his NFL debut on December 27, 2021, against the Miami Dolphins. In that game, Book completed 12 of 20 passes for 135 yards.
After being released by the New Orleans Saints on August 30, 2022, Book was acquired from waivers by the Philadelphia Eagles on August 31. Although he dressed for two games with the Eagles last year, he did not have the opportunity to play. Unfortunately, his time with the Eagles came to an end when he was released on August 29, 2023.
Matt Corral’s Background
Matt Corral, 24, joined the New England Patriots after being claimed off waivers from the Carolina Panthers on August 31, 2023. He was originally drafted by the Carolina Panthers in the third round (94th overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Mississippi. However, Corral was released by the Panthers on August 30.
During his rookie season, Corral suffered a preseason injury that led to him spending the entire year on injured reserve. Prior to his NFL career, Corral played four seasons at Mississippi, where he showcased his talent by accumulating 8,287 passing yards and 57 touchdowns.
With the release of both quarterbacks, the New England Patriots are expected to explore other options to strengthen their quarterback depth chart.
