NBA’s In-Season Tournament: Lakers, Celtics, and 76ers Secure Wins
The second night of the NBA’s inaugural In-Season Tournament saw victories for the Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics, and Philadelphia 76ers. Additionally, the Charlotte Hornets climbed to the top of the group standings, surpassing the Miami Heat and Milwaukee Bucks.
All three “East B” teams, including the Hornets, are currently 1-0. However, the Hornets hold the best point differential and points scored in the group, giving them the top spot ahead of the Heat and Bucks.
Five teams had already made their tournament debuts on Friday. The Brooklyn Nets, the only winners from last week within that group, suffered a loss to the Celtics, dropping their record to 1-1. Meanwhile, the Dallas Mavericks improved to 1-1 with a stellar performance from Luka Doncic, who recorded 44 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists. On the other hand, the Washington Wizards, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Memphis Grizzlies find themselves in a tough spot with 0-2 records, needing to win all their remaining games to have a chance at reaching the knockout stage.
The Lakers, who had previously struggled on the road with a 0-5 record, secured their first road victory of the season against the Phoenix Suns. This win improved their overall record to 4-5. Currently, the Lakers hold the second spot in the “West A” group, just behind the Utah Jazz. The other group leaders are the 76ers (East A), Celtics (East C), Denver Nuggets (West B), and Minnesota Timberwolves (West C).
The Atlanta Hawks and Orlando Magic are the only two teams yet to play their first tournament game, as they were involved in Thursday’s Mexico City game, which was won by the Hawks.
The In-Season Tournament format includes dividing each conference into three five-team groups. The teams will play group stage games on Tuesdays and Fridays throughout November. The games will be played on specially-designed courts, and the teams will debut their city edition uniforms for this season.
Once all five teams in each group have played against each other, the top eight teams will advance to the knockout stage in early December. The six group winners will be joined by one wild-card team from each conference.
