In recent NBA history, the Boston Celtics have emerged as one of the most formidable champions, demonstrating their prowess by ranking among the top two teams in both offense and defense during the regular season, ultimately clinching their 18th title after only three playoff losses.
Although the NBA has not seen a repeat champion in seven years, it’s no surprise that the Celtics are favored to once again lift the Larry O’Brien Trophy in 2025. According to the 23rd annual NBA GM Survey, an impressive 83% of respondents believe Boston will achieve this, marking the third-highest percentage for a title prediction in the survey’s history. Coincidentally, the Celtics were also the most frequently mentioned team for both having the best defense and leading in offensive efficiency this season.
While the Celtics may not be home to the survey’s most popular players, GMs have recognized Jayson Tatum as the best small forward for the second consecutive year. Additionally, Jrue Holiday was acknowledged as the best perimeter defender in the league.
Interestingly, the survey identified a 20-year-old, who has played only 71 games in the NBA, as the best overall defender: Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs. He is also the player that most decision-makers would choose to start a franchise with.
The GMs answered 50 diverse questions targeting the top teams, players, coaches, and offseason activities. It is worth noting that general managers were prohibited from voting for their own teams or personnel. The percentages are reflective of the respondents for each specific question rather than the total of all 30 GMs.
