SAN DIEGO — For the Houston Astros, September is synonymous with farewells, much like clinching the American League West title or celebrating with champagne in the clubhouse. Both have become traditions for a team basking in a remarkable era. Equally significant is the process of saying goodbye to the players who have contributed to this legacy.
In baseball, goodbyes unfold slowly. The array of ”lasts” can extend throughout September, whether it’s a final road trip, the last regular-season game, or a bid for greatness.
On Thursday evening, Houston will kick off its last regular-season homestand.
The uncertainty surrounding whether this will be Alex Bregman’s final appearance in an Astros uniform looms large, a reality the team has grown accustomed to facing. Departures that might jeopardize their success do not seem to faze the Astros. This resilience is attributed to a culture fostered by many individuals, but ultimately maintained by Bregman and Jose Altuve. It’s difficult for fans, as well as the face of the franchise, to imagine a team without either of them.
“I don’t see any chances of him leaving,” Altuve remarked earlier this week. “That’s just my perception. I firmly believe that, at the season’s end, our front office, including the GM and ownership, will secure a deal for him. I don’t think — I’m confident — that we are a better team with him, and we are also a stronger organization. We really need to ensure this happens.”
When Altuve speaks, his insights carry weight that few others within the organization can match. While both he and Bregman are represented by agent Scott Boras, Altuve doesn’t often express his thoughts in such definitive terms.
When he does, it deserves serious attention as the organization approaches a potential turning point. Altuve noted, “Bregman’s nine years with the Astros have made this entire organization better than it was before him.”
“Words can’t fully capture what he contributes to this clubhouse,” stated center fielder Jake Meyers. “In terms of the impact one player can have on a team, he extends his influence to position players, pitchers, and everyone. His contributions are visible on the field, but the everyday actions he takes to help the team succeed off the field are truly extraordinary.”
Altuve remains grounded. He is the longest-tenured player in the organization and possesses a deep understanding of its inner workings. While he recognizes the uncertainty surrounding Bregman’s future, he confesses, “It doesn’t instill confidence in me that the Astros will keep Bregman, given the organization’s behavior over the past eight years.”
“Perhaps it’s just that I prefer not to dwell on it, so I try not to think about it,” Altuve concluded.
“While I don’t have control over the situation, if it were up to me, I would pay Breggy whatever he desires. His professionalism, passion for winning, and his relentless pursuit of improvement at this stage of his career — he’s a superstar — are exceedingly rare qualities. You don’t often encounter players who strive for continuous improvement like he does every year, every day. We really need to recognize and reward players like him.”
It would be misleading to claim that the Astros have failed to do so. Altuve has secured two five-year extensions totaling $276 million. Yordan Alvarez landed a six-year, $115 million contract before entering salary arbitration. Bregman himself signed a six-year, $100 million contract before the 2019 season.
Since signing that deal, only eight major league players have delivered more wins above replacement than Bregman, as per FanGraphs. Of those, only José Ramírez plays the third baseman position like Bregman. Though Bregman’s power numbers have declined and he has experienced some challenging starts to seasons, his capacity for on-base performance, plate discipline, and elite defense remains strong.
“He boasts an impressive career, approaching 40 WAR,” said Boras about Bregman, who has recorded 39.3 fWAR and 39.1 bWAR. “In many respects, he’s on a pathway to the Hall of Fame. Reaching the 75-80 WAR range places you in that conversation.”
Boras recently negotiated a six-year, $151 million extension for Matt Chapman, a third baseman only a year older than Bregman but with nearly the same WAR figures. However, Bregman stands out as a more prolific offensive performer with a playoff experience that Chapman cannot rival.
Chapman’s contract should set a baseline for negotiations with Bregman, who mentioned this week that he has not received any formal offer from the Astros. Throughout the season, general manager Dana Brown has reassured that the club would make an offer to Bregman. Brown did have discussions with Boras during Houston’s series in Anaheim last weekend.
Under Jim Crane’s ownership, the Astros have not issued a contract exceeding the $151 million extension Altuve signed in 2018. Crane has also never offered a contract spanning more than six years.
Whether he is prepared to adjust his philosophies may determine the seriousness of Houston’s pursuit of Bregman. The team presented shortstop Carlos Correa with a five-year, $160 million contract before he entered free agency. Correa opted out in search of what he described as a “big, long” deal — precisely the type Crane has traditionally steered clear of.

Failing to pursue Correa more seriously led to genuine skepticism about whether the Astros could retain a player seeking substantial contracts. Following Houston’s sign-stealing scandal, he became the most vocal advocate within the clubhouse and its clear leader. Correa consistently voiced his ambition to be “an Astro for life.”
While Bregman has not made similar statements, his hesitance does not signal a desire to exit Houston either. His ultimate destination will be determined by the financial terms, much like what transpired with Correa.
“I’ve learned a great deal about baseball and have been lucky to play for an organization that prioritizes winning and has competed in the playoffs each year,” Bregman remarked. “Winning is what I want to achieve throughout my career. That has always been my primary focus.”
This passion for winning is evident to anyone who knows Bregman. One of his goals this season has been to instill this mindset in his teammates. In a clubhouse seeking leadership, Bregman has emerged as its cornerstone.
He inspired Hunter Brown to throw the sinker that transformed his season, began playing “Wild Thing” before Framber Valdez’s starts at Minute Maid Park, and, as Altuve noted, has mentored the team’s numerous call-ups, guiding them on how to navigate the big leagues.
“I just wanted to support them, just as others had supported me,” Bregman explained.
“It’s tough to quantify what he means to all of us,” rookie pitcher Spencer Arrighetti commented. “He’s been there to help us break it down and understand how our team has achieved success. He’s an incredible teammate.”
How much longer he will be with the team remains uncertain. Bregman insists that his focus is solely on finishing the regular season strong and securing a fourth consecutive division title. Achieving this will ensure at least two additional games at Minute Maid Park during a Wild Card series. He still hasn’t fully grasped that Thursday marks his last homestand.
“It’s certainly in the back of your mind, but I haven’t been dwelling on it,” Bregman admitted. “Right now, my thoughts are more on the playoff push and on being there for my teammates each day. But, now that you mention it, it could be.”

3. The New York Yankees and Derek Jeter
The Yankees navigated Jeter’s contract extension by focusing on his pivotal role in the team’s history and brand, making sure he retired as a Yankee, which resonated well with fans.
