SOUTHINGTON, CT — The Aqua Turf Club welcomed racing royalty on Sunday afternoon, as a NASCAR legend returned to Connecticut to honor a longtime friend and colleague who received a distinguished award from members of the state’s sports media.
Bob Cuneo, the recently retired founder of Chassis Dynamics in Oxford, was honored with the President’s Award during the 82nd annual Gold Key Dinner. This event, organized by the Connecticut Sports Media Alliance (CSMA), has been recognized as one of the most prestigious sports ceremonies in the Nutmeg State since its inception in 1940.
Cuneo was acknowledged for his role in developing an American-made bobsled, designed to compete with the best teams globally. Before his involvement, the United States had not won a single Olympic medal since 1956, and had not achieved gold since Harry Truman’s presidency in 1948.
While visiting the Olympic training facility, NASCAR driver Geoff Bodine, the 1986 Daytona 500 champion, realized that the American teams were using second-hand sleds obtained from competitors in Europe, particularly Germany and Switzerland. He reached out to Cuneo, a close friend from their time on the New England auto racing circuit, leading to the establishment of the Bo-Dyn Project (“Bo” for Bodine, “Dyn” for Chassis Dynamics).
The new sleds made their debut at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway, but their impact was first felt during the 1998 Games in Nagano, Japan, where the American four-man team finished fifth, just 0.02 seconds shy of a bronze medal. This performance set the stage for the 2002 competition in Salt Lake City, where the U.S. secured a gold medal in the inaugural two-woman event, while the four-man teams earned silver and bronze.
