Denver Broncos assistant head coach Mike Westhoff has stepped down to address a potential health concern, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported Tuesday.
Westhoff, 76, experienced vision issues last week and underwent testing Monday, which included an MRI. Following consultations with doctors and discussions with head coach Sean Payton, Westhoff decided to return home to Florida.
“Making this decision wasn’t easy,” Westhoff said in a statement to NFL Network. “But it was a wake-up call that putting my health first is crucial. This team is on the right track with a solid foundation and a winning culture. I’m grateful to Sean for giving me the opportunity to contribute to such a first-class organization, and I wish the Broncos all the best.”
This is Westhoff’s second season as assistant head coach for the Broncos but marks his 33rd year in NFL coaching.
A veteran special teams coach, Westhoff began his NFL career in 1982 with the Indianapolis Colts. He spent the longest tenure of any team as part of the Miami Dolphins coaching staff from 1986 to 2000, serving as a special teams and tight ends coach. He then coached with the New York Jets from 2001 to 2012 before two seasons with the New Orleans Saints and Payton from 2017 to 2018. He reunited with Payton in Denver when he was hired on February 25, 2023.
