LOWELL – After enduring a long, intense summer filled with rehabilitation and training, Matthew Poitras was ready for some fun in the sun.
The prospect for the Boston Bruins enjoyed plenty of excitement during Day 2 of the team’s Fan Fest Tour, which took place at Tsongas Center in Lowell on Saturday.
Presented by Wegmans, this three-day event is part of the Bruins’ 100-days of hockey initiative, showcasing a day rich with interactive activities for kids, photo opportunities, and giveaways. The tour commenced on Friday at The Colisée in Lewiston, Maine, where Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery made a noteworthy appearance.
Poitras, along with his teammates John Beecher and Mason Lohrei, welcomed a large crowd on Saturday. For the young player, this was a refreshing break as he aimed to continue from where he left off with the Bruins last season. The agile center made a striking debut with the team last October before sustaining a season-ending shoulder injury in January.
“It feels good,” Poitras, 20, expressed. “This summer has felt long. My season ended early, so I’ve been in summer training for quite a while. The shoulder feels great. I’ve been engaged in regular training and skating for the past couple of months.”
Poitras had quite an eventful first year in the NHL.
Selected by the Bruins in the second round (54th overall) during the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, the rookie joined the Bruins’ opening night roster as a 19-year-old. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound center recorded his first NHL point in his debut game by assisting on a Trent Frederic goal. Later that month, on October 22, he scored his first two NHL goals in a 3–1 victory against Anaheim.
His standout performance continued while on loan to Team Canada for the 2024 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, where he tallied two goals and two assists across five games. Poitras returned to Boston at the start of 2024 but faced a setback with a shoulder injury that ultimately necessitated surgery. He concluded his rookie season with five goals and 15 points in 33 games.
“Everything felt like it flew by,” shared Poitras. “I didn’t foresee ending up in that position. I’m just looking to apply what I learned last year and carry that into camp this year.”

Now fully recovered, the Bruins prospect is eager to return to training camp next month.
“Following surgery, I gained a bit of weight because I was focused on working out, not skating,” he mentioned. “I didn’t skate for three months. This summer has been all about getting back to my previous fitness level. I’m working to spend as much time on the ice as possible, getting my repetitions in and reacquainting myself with the puck after such a long hiatus.”
Anticipations are understandably high for the young forward as September approaches.
“I’m looking forward to camp,” Poitras stated. “I prefer to take things one day at a time. My goal is to establish myself on the roster and maintain consistency. I want to arrive at camp in better shape than I was last year. I did well in preseason games last season. This time, I aim to enter camp in top shape and ready to compete for all 82 games.”
All three Bruins were impressed by the turnout on Saturday.
“It’s a fantastic turnout,” Beecher remarked. “We’re excited. It’s always beneficial to engage with the community, support local events, and give back because, without our fans, we wouldn’t be able to do what we love.”

The Fan Fest evoked nostalgic memories for all three Bruins, who attended similar events during their upbringing.
“Meeting some of your heroes was always thrilling,” Poitras recalled. “Growing up in Ontario, meeting players from the Oshawa Generals was a highlight. Your day feels complete when you meet someone like that. It’s simple for us to come out for a few hours and bring joy to people’s faces.”
By all accounts from the crowd’s warm response, the mission was accomplished.
