EDINA, Minn. — The bag slung over his shoulder, adorned in Winnipeg Jets blue and silver, seemed somewhat out of place.
However, as Mason Shaw exited Braemar Arena after Wednesday’s Da Beauty League game, it was clear that the Minnesota Wild fan favorite still enjoyed immense popularity.

At 27 years old, Shaw dedicated the first seven years of his career to the Minnesota organization. Despite enduring four ACL tears that brought plenty of heartbreak and challenges, he returned stronger each time. This resilience is why he was nominated for the local chapter of the PWHA’s Masterton Trophy and regarded as a “heart and soul player” by Wild staff.
Although Shaw signed a one-year, two-way contract worth $775,000 with the rival Jets in July, little has changed. He spent the summer in Minneapolis, home to his girlfriend and his close friends — his former Wild teammates. They enjoyed golfing, shared some beers, and soon enough, they would part ways to face off against one another in two of the first three preseason games set for September.
“There are guys I’ve hung out with here in Minnesota over the past few years who will be friends for life,” Shaw expressed. “This place is undoubtedly special to me. In the brief time I’ve spent here, I feel as though I’ve created a home.”

“I checked the map to find the shortest route back to the farm,” Shaw joked, referring to his hometown of Wainwright, Alberta. “That 18-hour drive back to Wainwright is no fun. I understand the first couple of preseason games will be against the Wild. Ultimately, it will come down to competing. Let’s see how it goes when the puck drops.”

Despite feeling like an NHL player, Shaw recognizes he must once again prove himself to secure a roster spot.
“I’ve got to go out and show what I can do,” Shaw commented. “I need to demonstrate that my health is not a concern and that I can perform at the highest level. This summer has been crucial for me. Given how last season ended, I consider it a significant accomplishment to bounce back from my challenges. However, I wasn’t competing at the level I aspired to. Thankfully, things are going well this summer, and I’m determined to give it my all.”
Although Shaw played a role in the Wild’s lineup last season, predominantly on the fourth line, he was aware that he had not fully returned to his optimal playing condition. Regaining that footspeed during a season can be quite challenging.
“During last year’s morning skates, I found myself in a position where I was constantly trying to earn my spot in the lineup,” Shaw reflected. “You give it your all, but sometimes you lack that extra step you’re accustomed to. I anticipated that outcome, considering I’ve been down this road before. However, now that I’m over a year and a half post-surgery, I feel like I’m back to the Mason Shaw I know I can be.”
