NASCAR enthusiasts are buzzing about potential improvements to the NextGen package, with tire falloff being a prominent topic of discussion. Many believe that today’s tires lack the same degradation rate as those used in the 1990s.
Legendary NASCAR driver Mark Martin recently shared a throwback photo on social media from his victory at the Hooters 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway in 1994. Martin, who holds the record for the second most wins in the Xfinity Series, pointed out the visible tire falloff on his car’s hood.
“Look at the hood,” Martin wrote. “Tires were gummy back then. They just make black powder now days.”
In the past, competitors had a choice between Hoosier Tire Co. and Goodyear Tires. The rivalry between these two tire manufacturers dates back to 1988. However, in April 1997, Goodyear became the official tire provider for NASCAR.
That same year, Martin won the Winston 500, setting a record speed of 188.354 miles per hour. It was his second consecutive win and second triumph of the season. Before retiring in 2013, he amassed another 20 victories at the Cup level.
Martin was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2017. He currently resides in Batesville, Arkansas with his wife, Irlene. The 65-year-old enjoys life away from racing, often traveling across the country in his RV.

This interaction sparked discussions among fans about Truex’s legacy and accomplishments in NASCAR.
