Angel Gomes Receives Red Card in Champions League
Lille began their Champions League journey on Tuesday night, facing Sporting in Lisbon.
The match ended in a 2-0 defeat for Lille, with top striker Viktor Gyokeres putting Sporting ahead before Zeno Debast unleashed a spectacular long-range shot into the net.
Lille’s start to the tournament was far from what they had aspired, which also applied to midfielder Angel Gomes.
The former United star has caught attention lately, having showcased his talent during his first two appearances for England over the international break.
Roy Keane commended Gomes’s performance, and reports suggested that Newcastle United is interested in acquiring him.
However, when Gomes took to the pitch for Lille against Sporting, his night quickly turned sour as he was issued a red card for two bookable offenses.
The midfielder was dismissed in the first half, unable to replicate his international form on the European stage.
Ex-Manchester United Player Gomes Issues Apology
Understandably, Gomes felt he had let his teammates down, especially after receiving a yellow card earlier in the match.
Following the game, he spoke to RMC Sport, expressing his frustration with the referee’s decision.
Gomes believes he should have at least received a warning since his second yellow card was not due to a particularly hazardous challenge.
He also conveyed his apologies to his teammates, acknowledging the additional challenge he created for them.
As a result of the red card, Gomes will face suspension when Lille goes up against Real Madrid in October, a matchup he was eager to participate in alongside Jude Bellingham and others.
“I think, of course, being on a yellow card, I should have been more cautious in the tackle against Gyokeres, but the referee was quick to issue the red card,” Gomes remarked.
“I could have at least received a warning since there was no malicious intent in the tackle, but I acknowledge the decision, and it’s something I’ll have to move on from. It certainly makes the game tougher for us. I apologized to the team, but playing with 11 against 11 is already a challenging task.”
“Of course, this isn’t how you envision it. Playing against the best teams in the world was what I looked forward to, especially facing Real Madrid at home with our fans,” he added.
This was not the Champions League experience Gomes had hoped for, but he remains determined to bounce back and shine again once his suspension is lifted.
