The plan
Last season, Manchester City faced disappointment after missing out on their first WSL title since 2016 by the narrowest of margins—goal difference. They are determined to change that narrative this season. As one of the strong favorites, they have bolstered their attack with the addition of the WSL’s all-time leading scorer, Vivianne Miedema, who joins the ranks alongside last season’s Golden Boot winner, Bunny Shaw. This duo presents a significant offensive threat.
However, their greatest strength lies in defense. Having conceded only 15 goals across 22 league matches last season, they recorded the fewest in the division. Their defensive prowess is largely attributable to their overwhelming possession, where they held the highest average (60%) in the WSL last season. This control is facilitated by the intricate play between holding midfielder Yui Hasegawa and their skilled center-backs, Alex Greenwood and Laia Aleixandri, allowing the team to navigate through any pressing situations.
Moreover, they boast impressive pace on the wings, particularly from England’s Lauren Hemp and Chloe Kelly. The team’s prospects have been further enhanced by the return of Dutch midfielder Jill Roord to full training. Coach Gareth Taylor indicated on Monday that she is “very close” to making her competitive return after suffering an ACL injury in January. Additionally, England midfielder Jess Park is displaying excellent form. Over the years, the club has finished as runners-up an agonizing seven times—six of those to Chelsea—and there’s a palpable excitement that this might finally be the season they achieve their potential. Nonetheless, they face a challenging start, with away matches against Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool—other top four teams from last season—within their first four fixtures.
