PHOENIX — Another season has passed, another team has been added, and once again, Luis Arraez is poised to claim a batting title.
Though it isn’t completely official, as the Braves and Mets will wrap up the 2024 regular season with a doubleheader on Monday.
On Sunday afternoon, Arraez nearly sealed his third consecutive batting title during the Padres’ 11-2 defeat to the D-backs at Chase Field. If confirmed, he will become the first player in MLB history to win a batting title with three different teams, achieving this feat in three straight seasons.
In the regular-season finale, Arraez went 1-for-3, concluding his day with a powerful double in the sixth inning, which raised his batting average to .314 — a figure well above that of his nearest competitors, Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers and Marcell Ozuna of the Braves.
Ohtani finished at .310, while Ozuna currently holds a .304 average and would require at least nine hits on Monday to equal Arraez.
“This is incredibly special for me,” Arraez remarked. “I’m here to play baseball, to help my team achieve victory, and to contribute in the ways necessary to win. I believe I have accomplished that.”
Once official, Arraez’s title will prevent Ohtani, the National League’s home run and RBI leader, from obtaining the first NL Triple Crown since Joe Medwick in 1937.
“He can accomplish many great things,” Arraez said, as he reflected on Ohtani’s impressive performances. “He’s unique.”
Arraez, who admitted to having a restless night prior to Sunday knowing what was at stake, concluded the season with 200 hits over 637 at-bats. His sixth-inning double prompted an eruption from the Padres’ dugout. In the inning’s bottom half, he was substituted defensively by Donovan Solano at first base.
“What an incredible hitter and what an outstanding individual,” stated Padres manager Mike Shildt. “He has been an integral part of this team. The record shows how valuable Luis has been since we brought him on board.”
Having won the American League batting title with the Twins in 2022 and the National League title with the Marlins in 2023, Arraez is on track to become the first Padre to secure a batting title since Tony Gwynn in 1997.
“We joked earlier,” Shildt quipped, “that we anticipate more batting titles to come for San Diego in the near future.”
In a fitting tribute, the NL batting champion now receives the Tony Gwynn Award. Gwynn achieved eight batting titles during his career in San Diego, with Gary Sheffield being the only other Padre to win one, with a .330 average in 1992.
San Diego acquired Arraez in early May and placed him at the top of their strong lineup, filling a much-needed left-handed on-base presence. As Shildt pointed out, the Padres were 16-18 at the time of Arraez’s acquisition, just before their first series in Arizona this season. They now stand at 93-69 and are about to host the NL Wild Card Series.
Arraez made history by recording four hits in his Padres debut. He was later selected for the All-Star team, although he did not participate in the game due to a left thumb injury. He recently also dealt with a troublesome left knee, yet he continued to excel at the plate.
“This means more,” Arraez commented. “I’ve faced many challenges this year with my body.”
Of his 200 hits this season, Arraez amassed 159 while playing for the Padres. This is the second-highest total for a player acquired in-season, trailing only Frank Taveras’ 167 hits after being traded from the Pirates to the Mets in 1979.
From August to September, Arraez achieved a remarkable streak of 141 consecutive plate appearances without a strikeout, marking the longest such streak in 20 years and the second-longest in franchise history; Gwynn previously reached 170 plate appearances without a strikeout in 1995.
Arraez’s batting style significantly influenced the Padres’ offense. They maintained the lowest strikeout rate in the majors, alongside the highest contact rate and batting average.
“Adding Luis to the lineup was essential — he embodies what we strive for: a player who fights through tough at-bats, handles the bat well, and can move the ball effectively,” Shildt stated. “He excels in two-strike situations and consistently puts the ball in play. This solidified our team’s identity even further.”
After 27 years, Arraez becomes San Diego’s first batting champion. He is signed for the upcoming season and has no intentions of joining a fourth team within four years — a sentiment echoed by the Padres.
“I love San Diego,” Arraez expressed. “They welcomed me with open arms. I feel like I’m part of a family here.”
