EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Logan Morrison continues to demonstrate his critics wrong while validating the⁣ faith of his supporters.

The 22-year-old forward served as top-line center and alternate captain for the Seattle Kraken during a 5-1 triumph over the Colorado Avalanche in the 2024 Rookie Faceoff at the Toyota Sports Performance Center on Saturday.

Morrison netted the game-winning goal ‌and excelled in most ‌of his shifts, which is impressive for a player who was overlooked three times in the NHL Draft.

This serves as yet another lesson ‍for hockey professionals ‍regarding the risks of doubting Morrison.

Perhaps this time, ⁣they will take heed.

“I ‍hope so,” he remarked.

This four-day tournament ‍features seven teams and⁢ showcases top-tier prospects, including Macklin Celebrini of ⁣the San Jose Sharks, who was ⁤the top pick in⁢ the 2024 NHL Draft, and⁢ Cutter Gauthier of the Anaheim Ducks, who was selected fifth overall in the 2022 NHL Draft.

However, ‌the impressive backgrounds of others have never deterred Morrison.

He has⁢ consistently relied on his own abilities, much to the ‌benefit of those who ‍believed in him. ⁣Among those ⁢reaping the rewards is‌ Kraken‍ general manager ⁤Ron Francis.

“Obviously,⁢ it’s ⁢been a long journey getting here, and there’s still a lot more ahead,” Morrison said.

Three seasons ago, he ‍racked up 100 points (34 goals, 66 assists) in 60‌ regular-season games with Hamilton in the Ontario Hockey League. Yet, he remained‌ undrafted, ⁤even after being passed over 225 times in⁢ the 2022 NHL Draft.

The following year, Hamilton traded Morrison to Ottawa in ⁣a significant OHL deal that brought six players to Hamilton. He scored ⁣20 goals and⁣ registered 39 points in just‍ 22 regular-season games for Ottawa, alongside 10 goals in 11⁤ playoff games.

Once again, 224 players ⁣were chosen without his name being announced.

He had previously received invitations to prospect camps, participated in an earlier version of this tournament as a free agent with the Los Angeles Kings, and competed⁤ in the Traverse City prospect tournament as a free agent with ⁣the Dallas Stars.

Each time, he was cut and sent back to⁣ junior hockey ⁢without a contract.

Rather than feeling‌ disheartened, Morrison used the setbacks as motivation.

“It’s a great feeling; being part ⁣of a team rather than being ‌a free agent is definitely ⁣rewarding,” Morrison expressed. “It required ‌a lot of hard ‌work, but it’s been⁤ wonderful.”

The Kraken acknowledged concerns surrounding Morrison’s foot speed. However, they ⁤believed it was‌ something that ⁤could be improved, especially given his positive attitude.

On April 12, 2023, they signed him to⁤ a three-year entry-level contract.

In return, Morrison proved the Kraken’s confidence well-founded⁢ with a standout season in Coachella⁢ Valley of the⁣ American Hockey League, scoring‌ 41 points (16 ⁣goals, 25 assists) across 64 games. He also contributed 10 points (one goal, nine assists) in 18 postseason games as Coachella Valley fell to‍ Hershey in the Calder Cup Final for the second consecutive‍ season.

<p“He’s a cerebral player,” remarked new Coachella Valley coach Derek Laxdal, who ‍coached the game on⁢ Saturday. “What he lacks in [foot speed] he compensates for with his intelligence. As he⁢ matures ⁢and adapts to the NHL/AHL, he finds ways to succeed.”

To enhance his foot speed, Morrison devoted⁣ 30 minutes before each practice last season to work ⁣with Coachella Valley assistant coach Jessica ⁢Campbell, a specialist ⁢in power-skating techniques.

His offensive strengths were matched by an increasingly solid defensive game that ⁢gained the trust of former coach Dan Bylsma, who now leads the Kraken after replacing Dave Hakstol.

Campbell ⁤has joined the Seattle‌ coaching ⁤staff as well,⁤ marking her as⁢ the first female coach in the⁣ NHL.

Morrison participated in four games with the Kraken last season, catching a glimpse of his dream.

Now, he is⁤ determined to make it a permanent reality.

Throughout the offseason, Morrison focused on gaining “good weight” to better compete at the NHL level.

“I arrived ‍at camp significantly stronger, and I’m just aiming to put my best foot forward; ⁣we’ll see what ⁢unfolds,” Morrison stated.

Laxdal would love to have Morrison on his first line in Coachella Valley, but he is uncertain whether Morrison ⁣will⁢ remain with the ‍AHL team after ‍training camp concludes.

He has learned‌ better than to bet against Morrison.

“I have a soft ⁣spot for kids who work hard, persevere, and fight through challenges. Those are the types of players who always⁣ seem ‌to succeed,” Laxdal commented. “Sometimes, these ⁤players get overlooked. When they put in the effort, they are rewarded‍ for it. It’s rewarding to see him receive what he deserves.”

Can‌ Morrison transform his diligence and familiarity with the new Seattle coaching‌ staff into a‌ full-time position this season?

“I hope so,” Morrison‌ said, his expression brimming with determination. “I’ll do ⁣everything I can.”

It‍ all began Saturday.
