NASCAR enthusiasts quickly recognize several key attributes of Leigh Diffey, the new announcer for NBC.
He exudes enthusiasm. He possesses a deep knowledge of motorsports. He excels in his profession.
Moreover, the Australian-American is noted for his distinctive accent.
Diffey took over play-by-play responsibilities for NASCAR Cup Series events in August, stepping in for Rick Allen in the NBC booth. Though he has only participated in three races so far, he brings with him a wealth of experience in motorsports, particularly from his work covering IndyCar for NBC.
This 53-year-old announcer faced immediate challenges. His debut included calling the finish of his first race, where Harrison Burton claimed victory at Daytona, marking his first triumph in the NASCAR Cup Series.

Diffey appears so well-suited for his role that many are questioning why he hadn’t been given a leading announcer position previously. Interestingly, he did have an opportunity with TNT, but, as he describes, a network executive dismissed him due to his accent.
During a guest appearance on the Off Track with Hinch and Rossi podcast, Diffey recounted his audition for the lead play-by-play position at TNT.
“I had the chance to audition for a NASCAR play-by-play role on Turner,” Diffey shared. “So I attended that audition. … It was Adam Alexander, Rick Allen, and me. Wally Dallenbach, Kyle Petty, and Larry McReynolds were also present — it was a comprehensive audition. We were tasked with calling the Homestead championship finale from the previous year.”
Diffey was taken aback by the extensive nature of the audition.
“It was far more elaborate than I had anticipated,” he noted. “I expected it would just be a brief five-minute commentary session. Instead, their entire production team was there. … I had to call around 150 laps.”
“Anyway, it went exceptionally well.”
However, Diffey didn’t land the position.
“I found out many years later that, um … how can I say this tactfully? I believe I was offered the job, but ultimately I wasn’t hired because the top executive at Turner didn’t want someone with an accent calling the Cup races,” Diffey explained.
Despite this apparent setback, Diffey has remained quite active in recent years. Most recently, he was a prominent voice for NBC during the Paris Olympics, delivering outstanding commentary, alongside one notable call during the men’s 100-meter final.
