The team, co-owned by seven-time Cup champion Jimmie Johnson and Maury Gallagher, has appointed Jacob Canter, a longtime NASCAR engineer, as the new director of competition.
Additionally, Bobby Kennedy has been named the general manager in a newly established role. He will report directly to CEO Cal Wells III. Kennedy brings extensive experience from his time as an executive with multiple NASCAR teams.
These changes follow the transition from Chevrolet to Toyota during the offseason, which has led to inconsistent results this year for full-time drivers Erik Jones and John Hunter Nemechek.

A former short track racer with a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Washington. Canter began his career as a technical engineer at MoTeC USA before moving on to Rusty Wallace Racing where he established an engineering department for the team.
In 2007,, Canter embarked on nearly 16 years with Joe Gibbs Racing in various roles including race engineer and research and development team manager. Most recently he served as the engineering manager for vehicle performance at GM Motorsports.
“I am incredibly excited to join Legacy Motor Club and start this new chapter,” Canter stated. “I’m grateful to Maury, Jimmie,Richard (Petty),and Cal for this opportunity. Being part of a team with such visionary leadership is truly advantageous.”
Canter will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the competition department including crew chiefs and pit crews while Kennedy will manage daily operations at LMC.
“Both Jacob and Bobby embody some of the finest talent in motorsports,” Wells remarked. “Their long-standing relationships with Toyota Racing Development will be crucial as Legacy MC aims to elevate its standing within the NASCAR Cup Series.”
The organization recognized that changes were essential at this point in time according to Johnson.
“This season has posed challenges and our performance hasn’t met expectations; thus these adjustments are necessary,” he noted. “Our goal is clear: we want to arrive ready to compete fiercely and win races.”
