Lee Carsley has been officially appointed as England’s new interim head coach, receiving strong support from his U21s midfielder, Harvey Elliott, this summer.
Carsley has been named as the temporary replacement for Gareth Southgate, who recently vacated his position as England manager following the Euros.
The FA confirmed in a statement that the 50-year-old will initially oversee two UEFA Nations League matches against the Republic of Ireland and Finland next month.
It is anticipated that Carsley will retain his position through the autumn while a search for England’s next permanent head coach continues.
This observation encompasses the entire Nations League group stage, which includes additional matches against Ireland and Finland along with two encounters with Greece during October and November.
Ahead of this schedule, it is hoped by the FA that they will have pinpointed Southgate’s long-term successor; however, Carsley’s candidacy remains a possibility.
Carsley’s appointment serves as an encouraging development for at least two Liverpool players. Elliott publicly praised the former Everton midfielder when addressing reporters in the United States last month.
“Absolutely [he is ready]. Lee is an incredible manager and an amazing person. He is prepared to take this step,” he was quoted saying by the Mail‘s Lewis Steele.
“Many prestigious clubs have shown interest in him, which speaks volumes about his coaching abilities.”
“Whenever I step onto the pitch for England I feel free to enjoy my football. I truly believe he is ready.”
Both Elliott and Curtis Jones have been prominent figures under Carsley’s management at U21 level; only centre-back Taylor Harwood-Bellis (23) has made more appearances under him than Elliott (20).
