Within two years of her appointment, Phoenix Raceway President Latasha Causey is establishing herself, embracing new responsibilities, and fostering growth in her desert role.
In late 2022, Causey made history by becoming the first Black woman to serve as a track president in the 75-year journey of NASCAR. She stepped into this role following Julie Giese’s departure to oversee the Chicago street race. This is Causey’s inaugural experience in NASCAR, where she manages a facility that hosts two annual NASCAR weekends, including its championship round in recent years.
Upon Giese’s exit, NASCAR had just finalized a $178 million renovation of the venue, which attracted sellout audiences to the races. Causey’s responsibility is not only to maintain this momentum but also to expand the venue’s usage, enhance its brand, and deepen its connection with the local community, where she grew up.
“Being a local girl, I’ve always had strong ties to the community; however, I am now even more engaged in the sports landscape and have been embraced as a leader in sports,” Causey stated.
As she continues to gain visibility as a prominent figure in the Valley’s flourishing sports business sector, Causey finds her calendar increasingly booked. Consequently, she is relying more on her team to assist while she seeks out partnerships or engages in public speaking for the venue across the region.
“I am involved in various events throughout the Valley — for instance, Phoenix recently hosted the WNBA All-Star Game — and I get the privilege of representing both Phoenix and NASCAR, as well as advocating for women in sports,” she expressed. “It’s incredible to receive invitations to share our Phoenix Raceway story.” — Adam Stern
