CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In May, Kyle Larson was unable to compete at Charlotte Motor Speedway, a race that played a role in him falling short of the regular-season title.
However, his win on Sunday at the track has established him as a leading contender for the championship.
Larson led 62 of the 109 laps, marking his sixth Cup victory of 2024 as he smoothly raced to victory on the Charlotte road course, which combines both an oval and an infield section.
Although Larson’s win was straightforward, the race had its share of drama, particularly during postrace inspection. His Hendrick Motorsports teammate, Alex Bowman, was disqualified after his car failed to meet the postrace weight requirements. Bowman’s 38th-place finish means he will not progress to the next playoff round. The team plans to appeal this decision, with the hearing set for later this week.
Bowman’s elimination allowed Joey Logano to take the final advancement spot into the Round of 8, which is NASCAR’s equivalent of a semifinal round.
William Byron came into the race already secured a place in the semifinal round, and he will be joined by his Hendrick teammates Larson and Chase Elliott, as well as Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin and Christopher Bell;
Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney and Joey Logano, along with Tyler Reddick from 23XI Racing, have progressed further in the competition.
Bowman, Austin Cindric, Daniel Suarez, and Chase Briscoe have been eliminated from the playoffs.

Bowman Disqualified
Despite finishing 18th and believing he had advanced, Bowman’s car was found to be underweight in postrace checks.
Hendrick Motorsports stated, “We are working to understand the issue and will determine on Monday whether to appeal.”
NASCAR Cup Series regulations stipulate that cars must weigh between 3,400 and 3,500 pounds, depending on the driver’s weight. Teams are allowed a tolerance of 0.5 percent—around 17 pounds—but Bowman’s car still did not meet the required weight.
The crew was permitted to add fuel and adjust the water system, but even after these modifications, the results remained unchanged.
NASCAR Cup Series Director Brad Moran commented, “We put it back on the scales, and unfortunately, it showed the same weight. The car had a weight issue… This results in a disqualification.”
Moran did not disclose the precise amount the car was underweight due to the potential of an appeal.
Larson – Championship Contender
While his remarks may seem boastful, Larson’s words are grounded in fact, as he currently boasts double the number of wins of any other driver this season.
Larson stated, “The competition is aware of our strength. They understand that we can win on any track.”
Crew chief Cliff Daniels added, “[With] a significant amount of respect for all the teams that will be in the Round of 8. Everyone has earned their place.”
I believe our biggest competition lies within ourselves, and if we can focus on the necessary tasks, our team is capable of executing successfully.
The series heads to Las Vegas for the next round, a venue where Larson has claimed victory in the past two races. Additionally, he has also triumphed at the other venues in this round—Homestead and Martinsville.
“We are looking forward to Vegas, taking with us confidence from our recent performance there,” stated Daniels. ”We will approach the race with a healthy respect and be prepared for all challenges ahead.”
Reddick’s Resurgence
Reddick, the champion of the regular season, collided heavily with Hamlin while attempting to avoid Austin Dillon in the second stage. This incident necessitated multiple pit stops for repairs, forcing him to spend a significant portion of the race trailing Logano in the fight for what they believed was the final playoff spot (until they were informed about Bowman’s disqualification hours post-race).
Opting to pit for tires with 27 laps left, and while Logano was reluctant to relinquish his track position, proved to be the correct decision as Reddick surged from 26th to 11th, finishing four points ahead of Logano, who slipped from fourth to eighth in the final 20 laps.
Reddick executed his moves primarily without incident, though he did make contact with Daniel Hemric in the hairpin turn.
“He simply made an error,” Hemric noted. “I was aware he had fresher tires. … Nothing major, just part of the chaos behind us. I understand he needed to advance, but I wished for a bit more patience on his part.”
Despite the regret for that misstep, it was a determined showing from the driver representing the team co-owned by Michael Jordan.
“That wasn’t exactly the strategy for making a comeback, colliding with fellow drivers we care about,” Reddick confessed. “However, that’s part of racing—it’s a cutoff race. You need to take bold actions and push forward. I aimed to do it as cleanly as possible… It was indeed a mistake.”
“Regardless, it remains a fact that it occurred. It did. But we had to overtake several cars.”
Cindric, who secured a fourth-place finish, maximized his efforts despite the challenges. Both Briscoe and Suarez encountered mechanical issues.
“I believe the team executed an excellent race strategy within sensible limits, and I drove to the best of my ability — but it just wasn’t quite enough,” Cindric remarked. “We performed well, but not at the highest level. It’s great to contribute when it mattered most, but we need to elevate our game to clinch a victory.”
