CONCORD — Following rain that interrupted Kyle Larson’s effort to complete both the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on the same day, preventing him from logging a lap at Charlotte Motor Speedway, he returned to the track with a renewed determination to deliver a memorable performance.
“I wouldn’t call it a chip, but the fact that he didn’t get to compete here and the Indy race didn’t go well served as additional motivation,” noted team owner Rick Hendrick.
On Sunday, Larson secured his sixth Cup Series victory of the season in a commanding fashion, advancing easily to the third round of NASCAR’s playoffs by triumphing at The Roval — the unique hybrid road course/oval at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
“Based on some of the comments he made after his experience in Indy and Charlotte, he took a lot of weight on himself, feeling he let his team and fans down,” shared crew chief Cliff Daniels. “While I don’t think he should have felt that way, I understand he did. He’s putting in the effort, intensity, and determination to compete at a high level with everyone else.”
Larson led an impressive 62 laps in his No. 5 Chevrolet, winning decisively with a margin of 1.511 seconds over long-time rival and title contender Christopher Bell.
“It felt nice to have a relatively stress-free weekend,” said Larson, who planned a quick getaway to Cabo with his family ahead of the third playoff round starting next weekend in Las Vegas.
He mentioned having visited Paris during the mid-season, Italy during the Olympic break, and that he typically wins a race prior to taking a vacation.
“I’ve won every race leading up to my vacations this year,” Larson remarked. “Maybe I should plan to take vacations every week. I shouldn’t need to argue or prove anything; this is my life, and we perform at a high level, so whatever.”
With this win, Larson marked his second victory in the playoffs, becoming the first championship-eligible driver to secure a win in the round of 12. The elimination race reduced the field from 12 drivers to eight, and among those eliminated from title contention was
Hendrick driver Alex Bowman was disqualified following post-race inspection.
NASCAR stated that Bowman’s disqualification was due to failing to meet the minimum weight requirement. This decision resulted in his removal from the playoffs and allowed Joey Logano to re-enter the title race.
“We are currently evaluating Monday’s decision and considering whether to submit an appeal,” said Hendrick Motorsports.
Along with Bowman, eliminated from championship contention were Team Penske’s Austin Cindric, Trackhouse Racing’s Daniel Suarez, and Stewart-Haas Racing’s Chase Briscoe.
Three of the four Hendrick drivers—Kyle Larson, William Byron, and Chase Elliott—have successfully moved on to the round of eight.
Joining them for the upcoming three-race series are reigning Cup champion Ryan Blaney from Penske, Joe Gibbs Racing drivers Denny Hamlin and Christopher Bell in Toyotas, as well as Tyler Reddick, the regular-season champion who made it through in a Toyota for 23XI Racing.
Two Ford drivers remain eligible for the Cup title: Blaney and his Penske teammate Logano.
Bell secured second place, closely followed by Byron, Cindric, Elliott, defending race winner AJ Allmendinger, and Shane Van Gisbergen. Logano finished eighth, with Bubba Wallace and Blaney completing the top 10.
Reddick began strong by winning the first stage but later spun with Austin Dillon during the second stage, dropping him to 37th place and below the cutline. He fought hard throughout the remainder of the race to finish 11th and maintain his playoff position.
Michael Jordan, Hamlin’s business partner in the ownership of 23XI Racing, embraced both Hamlin and Reddick on pit lane after they advanced.
Logano, on the other hand, finished eighth and was previously eliminated by four points from moving to the next round until Bowman’s disqualification changed his fate.
First driver eliminated
Briscoe was forced to exit the race with 66 laps remaining due to mechanical damage, officially ending Stewart-Haas Racing’s championship hopes. The team plans to reduce its operations from four cars to one next year, following Tony Stewart’s exit from ownership, with Briscoe set to drive for Gibbs in 2025.
“I wish we were still in the championship battle. It stings,” Briscoe admitted. “I feel for the employees at Stewart-Haas; they were invested in the 14 car, and the environment we’ve experienced these past few weeks has been genuinely exciting to be part of.
“I’m saddened to see it come to an end. I understand what it signifies for Stewart-Haas to no longer contend for a championship. That goal has kept many people motivated, honestly, in the building.”
Vance visits NASCAR race
The race saw attendance from Republican vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance, who was joined by Donald Trump Jr. during both the pre-race driver meeting and on the starting grid. Former President Donald Trump had attended the Coca-Cola 600 at the same venue in May.
Change in curbing
NASCAR announced a modification to the racetrack prior to Sunday’s event, as Charlotte officials replaced the 4-inch “turtles” with 2.25-inch curbing.
The new, smaller curbing is intended to reduce the impact felt by Cup Series drivers when their cars hit the speed bumps.
After practice and qualifying, some drivers expressed their concerns regarding the harshness of the landings after surpassing the turtles, with Martin Truex Jr. and Kyle Busch stating they felt concussed from the impact.
