NASCAR champion Kyle Larson has asserted that he is a “better all-around driver” than F1 frontrunner Max Verstappen.
Larson, who won the Cup championship in 2021, is considered one of the finest drivers in motorsport outside of grand prix racing and is hailed as one of the most naturally gifted talents to ever compete in NASCAR.
Beyond his commitments with Hendrick Motorsports in the Cup series, Larson frequently participates in sprint car races. Recently, he secured his third Knoxville Nationals title and also made an appearance in the Indy 500 in May, making him the first active Cup driver to attempt the ‘double duty’ of the Coca-Cola 600 since 2014.
Since 2021, Verstappen has taken the mantle from Lewis Hamilton as ‘the driver to beat’ in F1, having shattered multiple records, including 19 victories from 22 races in the ’23 season, earning him his third world championship.
However, Larson believes he could easily compete with Verstappen given the right equipment.
“Not really. I know in my own mind I’m better than him as an all-around driver,” Larson stated to FloRacing when asked if he needed to defeat Verstappen to be considered the best driver globally.
“There’s no way Verstappen could jump into a Sprint Car and win the Knoxville Nationals. He wouldn’t be able to win the Chili Bowl or take a Cup race at Bristol either.
“I probably wouldn’t win a Formula 1 race at Monaco, but I feel I’d have a better chance of succeeding in what he does than he would have in my realm, purely because of the vehicle dynamics.
“That’s what gives me comfort and confidence—I know I’m better than him.
“Maybe not in an open-wheel IndyCar or Formula 1 car, but that’s just one discipline. I’m confident I would surpass him in all the others. Feel free to quote that.”
Larson vs Verstappen
With Larson unlikely to transition to F1 and Verstappen not moving in the opposite direction anytime soon, their opportunities to race against each other are scarce.
One possibility that has been entertained is if motorsport were to be included in the Summer Olympic Games.
It was omitted from the upcoming Paris games and will not be featured in Los Angeles 2028, though there has been talk of its inclusion in the Brisbane 2032 games. Nevertheless, Larson believes that motorsport may not align with the Olympic ethos.
“I just don’t envision racing being part of the Olympics; they focus entirely on the athlete,” he commented.
“Like, pure athleticism is the key to winning, while racing always involves an element of machinery. The car factor makes it not entirely 100% about the athlete.
“Even if you placed two seemingly identical cars side by side, they still wouldn’t be identical. That’s why I don’t think racing will ever make it to the Olympics. Yet, I would also love for it to be included because I would want to participate in it.
“I’d relish the chance to compete, and perhaps I’d have a different outlook if given the opportunity.
“At this moment, though, I’m uncertain. I just don’t believe it fits the criteria for an Olympic sport.
“But I would absolutely cherish the chance to vie for an Olympic gold medal, or any medal for that matter, racing against Max Verstappen or competitors from other nations.
“That would be quite amazing.”
