Kim Holds Lead at LPGA Season Opener
ORLANDO, Fla. — A Lim Kim maintained her lead at the hilton Grand vacations Tournament of Champions on friday, shooting a 69 to reach 10 under for the tournament.
Kim,coming off a bogey-free opening round,followed that up with six birdies and three bogeys on Friday. She leads Linn Grant by three strokes after Grant’s second-round 67.
Top-ranked Nelly Korda rallied from an even-par start through 22 holes to shoot 67 and is four strokes behind Kim.
“There is no better tournament than this tournament to kind of come back,” Korda said of the season opener, which features a pro-am format with athletes and celebrities. “New season,it’s more easygoing.”
Korda, who won seven tournaments last season, including her second major championship, is enjoying the camaraderie of the event. She’s playing alongside former Major League Baseball players Kevin Millar and Derek Lowe,with who she has formed friendships over her six years participating in the event.
Lowe even assisted when a fan proposed marriage to Korda.
“D Lowe shut him right down,” Korda said. “I didn’t say anything and he was like, ‘Bud, I think that was a no.’ He was like, ‘Did I speak out of turn?’ I was like, ‘No, that was a great answer.’”
Rio Takeda and Leona Maguire are also four shots back of the lead after shooting 68s on Friday.
Defending champion Lydia Ko, who had four wins in 2023, including an Olympic gold medal and the AIG Women’s Open at St. Andrews, made a change to her putter after a first-round 73. Using her 2023 putter, she shot a 67 on Friday and is six strokes back.
On the celebrity leaderboard, former NHL player Joe Pavelski holds a one-point lead over Mardy Fish. Derek Lowe, Mark Mulder, and Jeremy Roenick are two points back.
