There’s significant pressure resting on the shoulders of Macklin Celebrini, the first overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft.
This pressure arises not only from his selection but also due to his status as one of the most celebrated top picks of the past decade.

Patience is crucial. Take, for instance, Joe Thornton, who was the first overall pick in 1997 and managed only three goals and four assists over 55 games in his rookie NHL season. It’s important to note the magnitude of these comparisons; even at once, both players were impactful. Kane, the first overall selection in 2007, won the Calder Trophy in 2008, whereas Toews, picked third overall in 2006, secured third place in the voting.
The Sharks would be elated if their new dynamic pair could replicate that kind of immediate effect. But remember, this sets the standard, not the expectation.

As a first-round pick for the New Jersey Devils in 2020, acquired by the Sharks in the Timo Meier trade, he has showcased his talent at every level, whether as a teenager in the KHL or as an AHL All-Star for the San Jose Barracuda last season.
Now is the moment for this 6-foot-4 player, who possesses impressive skating abilities and puck control, to claim a position on the Sharks’ thin blue line.
It’s important to note that defensemen often take longer to fully develop than forwards. However, at 22 years old, this Russian has the potential to become San Jose’s top defenseman by the season’s end.
