LOS ANGELES — Justin Turner made his return to Dodger Stadium on Monday night, marking his first visit since departing from the Dodgers in 2022 after an impressive nine-year tenure as their determined third baseman, which included winning a World Series title.
“It was one of the best things that ever happened to my career, getting a chance to wear this uniform that so many legendary players have donned through the years and to be part of teams that achieved historic milestones,” Turner expressed prior to the game. “I truly feel honored to have been a part of it.”
Now at 39 years old, he is playing first base for the Seattle Mariners, who are kicking off a three-game series against the leaders of the NL West.
Joining him behind home plate for a pregame ceremony were his wife, Kourtney, and their son, Bo, who was born on July 4. They were able to see a video showcasing his career highlights as a Dodger, after which the team honored Turner with a $10,000 check for his foundation and presented him with three framed photographs capturing moments from his career.

As his walk-up music, “Turn Down for What,” played, Turner embraced Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and pitchers Clayton Kershaw and Joe Kelly, among others.
“What’s up, L.A.?” Turner greeted the crowd, which rose to their feet in applause. “From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank you all so much for nine of the most incredible years of my life. You contributed to making this one of the most special times, and I can’t express my gratitude enough.”
Turner and Kourtney, who were married in 2017 by former Dodgers pitcher Orel Hershiser, became well-known civic contributors in Los Angeles, leveraging their foundation to assist homeless veterans, ill children, and youth baseball programs.
During his tenure in Los Angeles, Turner would greet the military hero of the game, introduced between innings, shaking their hand and presenting them with an autographed baseball.
Dodgers fans showed their admiration by sporting fake red beards in honor of Turner.
“In my nine years here, I don’t think there has been a bigger fan favorite,” said Roberts. “The fans truly connected with him.”
Following the 2013 season, Turner was non-tendered by the New York Mets, becoming a free agent. Just before the start of spring training the following year, he found a new home in Los Angeles.
Initially, he failed his physical with the Dodgers, and his guaranteed contract was converted into an invitation for spring training as a non-roster player. Turner, a Long Beach native, stepped into the clubhouse on his first day and was met with icons like Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke, Kenley Jansen, Adrian Gonzalez, Andre Ethier, Matt Kemp, and Hanley Ramírez.
“It felt like a pinch-me moment, like do I really belong in this room with all these legends?” he reminisced.

Turner successfully made the team just before they traveled to Australia to kick off the 2014 season against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
In 2017, he achieved All-Star status for the first time, recording six hits in 13 at-bats during the National League Division Series, which notably included a game-winning home run in the ninth inning of Game 2 against the Chicago Cubs. Turner and Chris Taylor were co-MVPs of the NL Championship Series, with Turner boasting a .333 batting average along with two home runs and seven RBIs.
Unfortunately, the Dodgers lost the World Series to the Houston Astros, where Turner had a batting average of just .160.
In 2020, the Dodgers secured the World Series title against the Tampa Bay Rays, with Turner hitting two home runs. He was pulled from Game 6 after testing positive for COVID-19 but returned to the field to celebrate with his teammates, which was a violation of MLB regulations. He later issued an apology.
After the 2022 season, the Dodgers opted not to exercise his $16 million option for the following season, making him a free agent. Turner played for the Boston Red Sox in 2023 and recently signed with Toronto before being traded to Seattle last month.
“On an emotional level, I wish he could have remained a Dodger forever,” said Roberts. “But that’s just the nature of sports; he will always be a Dodger in my eyes, and we’re going to remain friends forever.”
“In my nine years here I don’t think there’s been a bigger fan favorite. Fans just really identified with him.”
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts on Justin Turner
After the 2014 season, Roberts became a first-time manager and credits Turner and Gonzalez for their support in front of the team, helping to foster trust.
“For that, I will always be grateful to those two in particular,” he remarked.
Currently, Turner is dedicated to aiding the Mariners in their pursuit of a postseason berth, but he has expressed interest in working with the Dodgers post-retirement.
“If that opportunity were to arise, it’s definitely something I would consider very seriously,” he noted.
Roberts fully supports the idea of Turner as a future big league manager.
“He’s arguably the smartest player I’ve ever known, with a comprehensive understanding of all facets of the game, both on and off the field, and the responsibilities that come with being a professional athlete,” he stated. “Managing a team is something he has on his radar. There’s a tremendous respect and admiration between him and the organization. To me, it seems like a no-brainer.”
