Jon Abbott has been named the new television voice for the Calgary Flames. The 39-year-old, originally from Aylmer, Ontario, takes over from Rick Ball, who left Calgary in June to assume the role of play-by-play broadcaster for the Chicago team.
“I’m really looking forward to coming to Calgary, meeting everyone, and settling into that environment,” Abbott shared with The Athletic on Monday. “I also can’t wait to bring my family out there with me very soon. It’s going to be fantastic.
“You almost wish it were already October so you could get started right away. It’s a whirlwind, but it’s truly amazing.”

With 24 years of broadcasting behind him, Abbott most recently served as the play-by-play announcer for the Ottawa Senators on TSN. He has also covered games for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Vancouver Canucks, and has worked at the Olympics, the World Junior Hockey Championship, and the World Hockey Championship, in addition to CHL, AHL, and National Lacrosse League games.

“I’ve received tremendous support from many great people over the years who have provided me with opportunities and believed in me,” Abbott reflected.
Learning that Ball was leaving Calgary came as “a bit of a shock” to Abbott. This summer, he talked with his wife and three children about the possibility of relocating to Alberta if he pursued the job opportunity. Subsequently, he connected with Sportsnet, leading to interviews with the Flames organization.
“The nature of the broadcasting business is that it can take time, and then suddenly things can escalate quickly,” Abbott noted. “I would say that’s how this experience unfolded as well.
“I’m really thankful that, they trust me and my family to join Sportsnet for broadcasting Flames games, and we’re excited about it.”
Abbott lists Bob Cole, Chris Cuthbert, Doc Emrick, Dennis Beyak, John Shorthouse, and former colleague Gord Miller as some of his broadcasting inspirations and favorites. When discussing his play-by-play style, he stated that he isn’t known for catchphrases but hopes his “passion, loyalty, and energy” are evident during the games.
“I just want to be passionate,” Abbott explained. “I aim to bring that passion and energy while focusing on what will excite viewers at home. The goal is to transfer the arena’s energy to them. It’s one of the best venues in the National Hockey League, and I know it will only improve once the new arena is completed in 2027.”
