John Textor’s Eagle Football Group has submitted a final bid to acquire Crystal Palace.
The group, led by the U.S. businessman who already holds a 45 percent stake in Palace, claims that their offer values the club “well above previous investment levels” and would facilitate full ownership.
It remains uncertain if Palace’s three other General Partners—chairman Steve Parish along with U.S. businessmen Josh Harris and David Blitzer—will agree to sell their stakes. Textor is concerned they may reject his proposal.
Should his bid be unsuccessful, Textor is anticipated to renew his attempts to divest his own stake in Palace. He is already working with investment banking firm Raine Group to actively pursue a buyer for Eagle Football’s interest and refocus on acquiring fellow Premier League club Everton, with whom he has entered a period of exclusivity following discussions with majority owner Farhad Moshiri.
Textor stated: “We recently made an offer to purchase the remaining shares of Crystal Palace at a valuation that significantly surpasses previous investment levels. We strongly believe that Palace has become a more valuable club since 2021, and we respect our partners enough to present a fair value, despite the circumstances.”
“It is also correct that we have yet to receive a response to our offer, and we think our Palace partners share our desire to retain their ownership. Thus, our efforts with Raine Group to sell our interests have resumed.”
Textor refrained from disclosing the offer’s value for Palace.
In an interview with The Athletic in May, he confirmed his collaboration with Raine Group after deciding that Eagle Football “is not a perfect match for Crystal Palace,” due to the club’s rejection of his multi-club model.
Despite a previous failed attempt to secure a controlling stake in Palace, he has now extended a final open offer to buy out Parish, Harris, and Blitzer, alongside numerous smaller shareholders holding less than five percent each.
In May, Textor announced their “intention to file for public company status soon.” This move is expected later this year, and Eagle will need to be a majority shareholder to effectively control decisions, making the acquisition of a controlling stake urgent.
If he is to successfully complete a takeover of Everton instead, selling his Palace shares first is imperative. “We have a significant number of interested parties in our process,” the statement elaborated. “We’ve received strong indications from qualified buyers and strongly believe that we can finalize a sale of our interests to proceed with the next community we aim to serve, embrace, and enjoy.”
Parish has managed Palace since leading a consortium to purchase the club out of administration in 2010. Under his leadership, the club was promoted to the Premier League in 2013 and has enjoyed a decade of continuous success in the top flight.
He has also emerged as a significant figure within the Premier League, often serving as an unofficial spokesman for clubs outside the ‘big six’.
In 2015, Harris and Blitzer each acquired an 18 percent stake in the club, joining Parish. Six years later, Textor became the fourth general partner, securing a 40 percent stake after investing £87.5 million. He further invested £30 million ($38.5 million) last year, increasing his ownership by five percent and substantially diluting the other shares.
This offer arises from escalating tensions within Palace’s ownership group, which has divided over the club’s strategic direction. Parish prioritizes infrastructure investments—focused on redeveloping Selhurst Park and building a new academy—while Textor advocates for further investment in the team.
As Parish effectively serves as the sole decision-maker at the club, Textor has expressed frustration regarding his lack of influence, previously hinting at needing to either make an offer to acquire the club or sell his stake.
“We have a spiritual divide regarding the merits of multi-club collaboration versus single-club governance,” he told The Athletic in July of the previous year. “However, fighting with him won’t enhance that discussion, so we refrain from conflict.”
“Is it likely I’ll remain a passive investor for an extended period? If you knew me, you’d realize that isn’t a viable long-term strategy.”
“Either we’re invited to assume greater leadership over time, or we’ll seek to invest our capital elsewhere. We believe it’s crucial to have a UK partner that collaborates with our other clubs as they do today.”
Eagle Football also owns Brazilian Serie A side Botafogo, Belgian club RWD Molenbeek, and Ligue 1 team Olympique Lyonnais.
Textor was further dismayed by Palace’s decision to support a moratorium on player loans between clubs under the same ownership during a Premier League meeting in November, a proposal that was ultimately rejected.
