On one hand, former Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard acknowledged that he mostly eluded the ire of coach Mike Babcock during their time together in Detroit.
“To be honest, I didn’t interact with him much,” Howard shared during his guest appearance on the Cam And Strick podcast.
Babcock’s tendency to be harsh with players contributed to his exit from coaching roles in Toronto and Columbus. Several former players from Detroit have since come forward with accounts of his dispiriting behavior as the head coach of the Red Wings.
Howard admitted sheepishly that some of these revelations were surprising to him.
“I was taken aback by everything that surfaced publicly, thinking, ‘Wow. Was I really that oblivious? Had I been living in my own bubble so much that I didn’t perceive what was happening?’” Howard remarked.
“Much of what occurred happened during games while I stood 90 feet away in the crease. Therefore, I had no clue any of it was unfolding.”
Modano Decision Resentment
A few instances left a bitter taste for Howard. Chief among them was an incident against Minnesota late in the 2010-11 season when Babcock made future Hall of Famer Mike Modano a healthy scratch for what would turn out to be his last game against the city where he began his NHL career.
This decision ultimately resulted in Modano finishing with 1,499 career NHL games logged on his record.

“We were all just stunned,” Howard recalled. “It felt like everyone was asking, ‘What is happening right now?’ To this day, I’m still baffled why.”
“Why would you make such a decision? Why bench Cheli (Chris Chelios) before an outdoor game at Wrigley Field?” Howard continued.
“Some choices seemed completely nonsensical. Why go down that road? It might have just been a display of power.”
Babcock Moments For Howard With The Red Wings
Babcock did not entirely overlook Howard during their time together in Detroit.
“Occasionally I’d walk into the dressing room and find him waiting there,” said Howard. “He’d say something like ‘Played some f**king dodgeball last night, eh Howie?’ And I’d respond with something like ‘Yep! Didn’t get hit though.’”
“Those kinds of comments were common but never felt too severe or cutting.”
The goalie did experience one particularly frustrating moment regarding how Babcock treated him late in the 2009-10 season when he became a finalist for the Calder Trophy as rookie-of-the-year.
The media sought opinions from Babcock about Steve’s chances, and here’s how he responded:
“The one time I truly lost my cool at him was when they announced me as a rookie-of-the-year contender,” recounted Howard. “During a media scrum right near me in Phoenix just before our playoff series opened…”
Babcock stated publicly to reporters: “My vote goes to (Vancouver’s defenseman) Tyler Myers.” My reaction was simply disbelief: ‘Really nice! Thanks for your support Mike.’ “
“Invariably though—the media then turns towards me asking about it which leads me to remind everyone—‘Unfortunately…he doesn’t hold any votes.’”
