ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. — Jared Spurgeon, the captain of the Minnesota Wild, acknowledged before the season started that the surgeries he underwent on his back and hip, which concluded his 2023-24 campaign, would necessitate daily care during the 2024-25 season. On Thursday, Bill Guerin, the general manager and team president, confirmed that Spurgeon’s absence from the last two games was indeed linked to those previous injuries.
Guerin described this situation as “part of the healing process.”
What he implies is that Spurgeon is feeling soreness and stiffness; however, after medical evaluations, no recurrence or new setbacks have been identified.
“It’s always a concern when players deal with injuries or surgeries, and sometimes patience is essential,” Guerin explained. “Healing takes time. Often — though I’m not a doctor — it can take longer than expected to recover. It may not be related to the initial injury; it’s merely part of the healing journey.”
Spurgeon will not accompany the Wild on their trip to Columbus on Friday or during the Florida-Tampa Bay leg of their upcoming road schedule. Instead, he will refrain from ice activities for a few days, allowing his condition to settle before he begins skating again. Guerin noted that the team would assess Spurgeon’s progress before deciding if he can rejoin them for the conclusion of their seven-game road trip on October 26 and 29 in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
After playing their first two games of the current trip in Winnipeg and St. Louis, the Wild made a brief stop back in Minnesota for an outdoor practice at the St. Louis Park Rec Center, which drew a large crowd.
The positive news?
Joel Eriksson Ek, protected by a full bubble shield, returned to practice for the first time after missing the last two games. He had surgery on Monday to reset his broken nose.
“Talking with him and seeing him, he’s feeling significantly better,” coach John Hynes remarked. “I saw photos of his nose right after the surgery, and it didn’t look good. Then he walked in today, and I thought, ‘Wow.’ It looked like he had taken some hits but wasn’t in terrible shape.”
