Buffalo, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) – Jack Quinn has yet to score in three games, while the Buffalo Sabres have collectively managed only three goals. Quinn is currently lining up alongside Dylan Cozens at center, with Zach Benson and Jiri Kulich on the wings.
After Friday’s practice, Quinn was the last player to leave the ice, dedicating an additional 30 to 45 minutes for extra training. He believes his line is performing reasonably well but acknowledges that it isn’t sufficient.
“I don’t think we’re satisfied with how we’ve been playing,” Quinn remarked after practice on Friday. “Personally, I feel like I can elevate my game, and I’m certain the entire line shares that sentiment. We’ve had opportunities, but they haven’t resulted in goals. We aspire to generate much more. So, we’re definitely eager to improve.”
Quinn believes he has pinpointed areas for improvement, which motivated him to put in extra effort on the ice following the practice.
“We just need to find a way to get the puck on our sticks more consistently and be proactive in wanting the puck, as plays emerge from that,” Quinn explained.
“I think we might be focusing too much on forechecking and not regaining possession right now. We must find a way to reclaim the puck because that’s where our offense begins. We need to prioritize winning the puck battle.”
It remains uncertain whether JJ Peterka will participate in Saturday’s game as the Sabres plan to assess his condition further after practice.
During practice, he was reunited with Cozens and Quinn, forming a line that has had success in seasons past. If they play together on Saturday, Quinn would embrace the opportunity.
“I think chemistry plays a big role. We both understand the game well and can anticipate each other’s moves. We are quite competitive and drive each other to improve,” the winger mentioned. “When we get the opportunity to play as a unit, it’s enjoyable, and we’ve experienced success before. If we do get to play together, I believe it’s a favorable sign and a strong match.”
Upon graduating from the Rochester Americans to the Sabres, Quinn and Peterka found a seamless fit with Cozens as their center, which doesn’t surprise Quinn.
“He elevates his teammates’ performance, so I think he can play well with anyone,” Quinn noted. “With JJ and me, he was an ideal fit. He executes so many fundamental aspects of the game well, and we spent most of our rookie year together. He was already a strong defensive presence for us, which allowed us to find a lot of success.”
Cozens currently leads the Sabres with 14 shots on goal, while Quinn has only recorded one, even with opportunities on the power play. This is an area that needs improvement.
Quinn is recognized as an elite shooter, and he must discover ways to position himself in shooting lanes and ensure that pucks reach the goaltenders.
Additionally, both Owen Power and Jordan Greenway were absent from practice for what the Sabres referred to as maintenance days. Their availability for Saturday’s matchup against the Florida Panthers remains uncertain.
On the other side, Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov had to be assisted off the ice during Thursday night’s game against the Ottawa Senators. According to David Pagnotta of “The Fourth Period,” Barkov has suffered a significant sprain and is expected to be out for at least a week.
FRIDAY’S LINES:
Benson – Thompson – Tuch
Peterka – Cozens – Quinn
Zucker – McLeod – Kulich
Malenstyn – Krebs – Lafferty
