The Intuit Dome in Inglewood, Los Angeles, welcomed fans for a preseason preview on Monday.
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — In an exciting debut, the new Intuit Dome opened its doors to basketball enthusiasts on Monday night as the Los Angeles Clippers faced off against the Dallas Mavericks in a preseason match.
Although the arena has welcomed concerts since August, this marks the first basketball game in the ambitious over $2 billion project envisioned by Clippers owner Steve Ballmer. Fans entered through doors equipped with facial recognition technology, while a double-sided halo board displayed an array of photos, videos, statistics, and more.
Previously, the Clippers shared the crypto.com Arena with the Lakers and the Kings, but now they have their own dedicated venue.
“It’s a fantastic feeling to finally have a home. The players are really excited about it,” said Clippers coach Tyronn Lue. “Our entire organization is thrilled. Tonight, our fans get a glimpse of what’s to come. Having our own space means you can leave your shoes in the locker room and find them there the next day. Everything is secure in our own building.”
On “60 Minutes,” which aired Sunday, Ballmer showcased the new arena, expressing hopes that it would enhance his NBA team’s performance.
“My instincts tell me this will be beneficial for our team if our fans can really engage and energize them,” Ballmer stated.
As fans entered the venue, they were greeted by an expansive 80,000-square-foot outdoor plaza featuring a basketball court accessible to the public.
Patricia Blakemore, who arrived at the arena, could hardly contain her excitement.
“It’s incredibly high-tech,” said Blakemore, a resident of nearby Manhattan Beach. “One thing that has made me really happy is how helpful the staff has been from the moment we parked.”
Eric Swallow, a new Clippers fan who purchased season tickets, remarked on his newfound support. “I became a fan today. They have a new stadium, and it’s really close to Manhattan Beach,” he said.
Estelle Talleu and Matteo Decarlini traveled from France to attend the game.
“I love basketball, and I wanted to experience L.A. and this unique atmosphere,” Decarlini shared. “In France, it’s just not the same; nothing like this exists. This arena is enormous.”
Talleu was particularly impressed by the halo board, exclaiming, “It’s incredible.”
Many fans, including her, captured plenty of videos inside the nearly 18,000-seat arena.
Ballmer touted the venue’s numerous restroom facilities and highlighted the 1,400 toilets during the “60 Minutes” segment. There’s a compelling reason behind this focus.
“I really dislike it when people have to wait in line,” Ballmer expressed. “Long lines for restrooms can prevent attendees from enjoying the game. It causes frustration.”
The Intuit Dome is situated in a vibrant area bustling with sports and entertainment, located less than a mile from Sofi Stadium, home to the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers, as well as The Kia Forum, a former venue for the Lakers now hosting concerts.
The arena operates on a carbon-free and cashless system, featuring all the modern amenities.
Fourteen-year-old Juvenal Martinez attended the game with his uncle.
“The arena is fantastic. I really like the technology, especially the facial recognition for entry,” he commented.
Ballmer began construction on the arena in 2021 and opened its doors in August. It is set to host significant events, including the 2026 All-Star Game and basketball for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
“This is beautiful,” said Mavericks coach Jason Kidd. “Having the chance to practice here (on Sunday) and go through shootaround, they truly did an incredible job. I believe the Clippers fans will be delighted. The fan experience will be unlike any other, and it’ll be exciting for us as the first visiting team to experience it.”
