Thuringian Badminton Community Celebrates Inclusive Competition and National Games Qualifier
ILMENAU, Germany (AP) — Ilmenau hosted its first Special Olympics badminton tournament on Saturday, March 29, 2025, drawing athletes from across Thuringia, Berlin, and Saxony-Anhalt. The event, a resounding success, also served as a recognition competition for the 2026 National Games in Saarland.
Ilmenau Debut and National Games Aspirations
following two prosperous years in Jena, the Thuringian badminton community moved the annual Landeswettbewerb to Ilmenau. The SV 1880 Unterpörlitz and the 1. Ilmenauer Badminton Club eagerly partnered to host the premiere event, which saw 22 athletes and 11 Unified partners participate.
The goal of sending badminton athletes to the National Games,set in 2023,is expected to be achieved in 2026.
