On Monday, Guy Gaudreau, father of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, participated as a guest coach at the Philadelphia Flyers training camp held in Voorhees, New Jersey.
He was invited by the Flyers’ head coach, John Tortorella.
Johnny, a forward for the Columbus Blue Jackets, and Matthew, who previously played professional hockey, tragically passed away on August 29 after being hit by a car while biking near their residence in Salem County, New Jersey, approximately 30 miles southwest of the Flyers’ practice facility.
Guy Gaudreau is a veteran hockey coach who has guided his sons at Hollydell Ice Arena in Sewell, New Jersey, as well as at Gloucester Catholic High School.
“He’s a coach who has made significant contributions to youth hockey out here,” Tortorella remarked. “I thought it was ideal to have him join us. He was a bit reluctant at first, and we allowed him to proceed on his terms. I believe it turned out really well today.”
During the practice, he was seen banging his stick on the boards and offering critiques on Tortorella’s coaching methods.
“He’s giving me a hard time about yelling at the players to skate faster,” Tortorella commented. “‘You’ve got only three lines out here; how much faster can they go?’ So, he’s definitely paying attention. It was beneficial.”
The players took time to engage with Gaudreau on the ice and all exchanged handshakes with him once practice concluded.
