This year’s South Carolina Stingrays Fan Fest featured significant alumni involvement, with three former Stingrays coaches now serving as NHL head coaches making their return to North Charleston on Saturday.
Spencer Carbery of the Washington Capitals, Jared Bednar of the Colorado Avalanche, and Ryan Warsofsky of the San Jose Sharks all attended the event at the North Charleston Coliseum. The trio engaged with fans and addressed questions from local media for a duration of three hours.

Carbery, who played left wing for the Stingrays for two seasons from 2008 to 2010, transitioned to a coaching role for the 2010-11 season. He took over as head coach in 2011 after Bednar and current Calgary Flames assistant coach Cail MacLean left for AHL positions.
Bednar was a part of South Carolina’s defensive lineup from 1995 to 2002 before becoming an assistant coach for the 2002-03 season. He ascended to head coach in 2007, leading the Stingrays to a Kelly Cup victory in the 2008-09 season while coaching Carbery.
Warsofsky, the youngest head coach in the NHL after being appointed last June, previously served as head coach for the Stingrays from 2016 to 2018. The 36-year-old initially joined the team as an assistant on Carbery’s staff before the 2013-14 season and later took over head coaching duties in 2016 after Carbery’s departure.
The three coaches collectively led the Stingrays to six appearances in the Kelly Cup Finals and secured three championship titles.
“We’re fortunate to have three NHL coaches who honed their skills here and managed to fit this event into their busy schedules,” said Stingrays President Rob Concannon to The Post and Courier. “They remember their roots and are eager to spend time in Charleston with the fans, players, and alumni who contributed to their coaching beginnings.”
Last season, Carbery and the Capitals faced Bednar’s Avalanche twice, with the Capitals losing both games. Carbery will compete against his former assistant, Warsofsky, for the first time on December 3, when the Sharks visit the Capitals in D.C.
“It’s not about Ryan Warsofsky versus Spencer Carbery; it’s San Jose against Washington,” Warsofsky stated. “Spencer is one of my closest friends, and we both want to win. Regardless of the outcome, we’ll enjoy dinner together the night before and have a few beers afterward.”
“Facing the Sharks will be a memorable experience,” Carbery added. “When the national anthem plays, and I look over at the opposing bench, I reflect on our connection as coaches.
“However, once the game starts, our focus is on winning. Whoever comes out on top will surely engage in some friendly trash-talking next summer on the golf course, so there’s added motivation to win.”
Next season, the Stingrays will see even more NHL coaching representation, with former defenseman Scott Ford joining the Columbus Blue Jackets as an assistant coach. Ford played for the Stingrays under Carbery and Warsofsky during the 2014-15 season.
The Stingrays will commence their 2024-25 season on October 19 with their home opener against the Savannah Ghost Pirates. Scott Davidson, who played for the team in the 2019-20 season and served as an assistant coach last season, will be embarking on his first professional season as head coach. South Carolina missed the ECHL playoffs last year under coach Brenden Kotyk.
