UDINE, Italy (AP) — Snipers were stationed on the stadium roof, and the city of Udine witnessed a significant police presence for Italy’s match against Israel on Monday.
Ultimately, both the game and a preceding pro-Palestine demonstration concluded without any incidents, with Italy securing a 4-1 victory over Israel in the Nations League.
Udine remained on high alert, the match occurring amidst the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has escalated into Lebanon following over a year of war in Gaza.
This was Israel’s first match outside neutral Hungary this year. After the Israel-Hamas war ignited on October 7 of last year, their national soccer team played in Kosovo and Andorra in November.
Since then, all of Israel’s matches have taken place in Hungary, including last month’s Nations League game against Belgium, as the Belgian Football Association declined to host the fixture for security reasons.
“We are going to play this match with the hope of convincing ever more people of the wrongness of war,” stated Italy coach Luciano Spalletti. “Many Israelis oppose it, and we must persuade even more individuals that this must come to an end.”
When Spalletti’s squad faced Israel in a “neutral” match in Hungary last month, roughly 50 Italy fans dressed in black turned their backs as a visible protest during the Israeli national anthem.
During Monday’s match in Udine, some boos resonated when the Israeli anthem played, but the majority of the crowd counteracted this with loud applause—similar to their response when the Israeli team was announced. At least one Palestinian flag was displayed.
A highly visible contingent of around a dozen Israeli fans vocally chanted their support throughout the match.
Fewer than 12,000 tickets were sold for the match—less than half of the 25,000-seat Stadio Friuli’s capacity—due to the extensive security measures, which included armed military personnel on the stadium roof.
Surrounding areas of the stadium were cordoned off 48 hours before the kickoff and designated as a “red zone,” allowing only ticket holders to pass through the tall metal barriers. Supporters were strongly urged to arrive early in light of the stringent checks.
Hundreds of additional police officers were deployed from nearby regions.
Earlier in the day, approximately 1,000 people participated in a pro-Palestine demonstration in the city center, displaying placards that included calls to ban Israel from soccer’s governing bodies.
