KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Hendon Hooker almost cost the Detroit Lions Saturday in their preseason matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs—but his composure ultimately turned the tide.
In his second preseason game back after a lengthy recovery from a torn ACL, Hooker connected on 12 of his 15 passes, throwing for 150 yards. He guided the Lions during a crucial game-winning drive that culminated in a field goal, sealing a 24-23 victory at Arrowhead Stadium.
After fumbling a handoff with running back Zonovan Knight near the Chiefs’ 5-yard line with just 2:19 remaining, Hooker quickly regrouped following a three-and-out from Kansas City. He orchestrated a five-play, 14-yard push that concluded with Jake Bates’ 43-yard field goal as time ran out.

“It’s huge,” Hooker remarked afterward. “As I’ve mentioned before, repetition is key, and being placed in various situations allows me to see how I respond. Sometimes facing a little adversity strengthens us for what lies ahead.”
Trailing 23-15 with just over five minutes left, Hooker capped a seven-play scoring drive with a 7-yard rushing touchdown. However, he was sacked on the subsequent two-point conversion attempt, leaving the Lions short by two points.
Following this, Josh Paschal forced a fumble during a sack of Chiefs quarterback Ian Book on the next series, but the Lions quickly gave the ball back after Hooker lost it on the subsequent play.
a slightly high snap from center Bryan Hudson as he attempted to place it into Knight’s stomach.
“That’s my fault,” Hooker acknowledged. “I need to take better care of the ball in that situation, but aside from that, I had a solid day.”
The Lions commenced their final possession just outside field goal range, thanks to a 20-yard punt return by Isaiah Williams. The QB connected with Tom Kennedy on a 14-yard bubble screen during the first play, followed by a short run from Jake Funk. Hooker then took two kneel-down snaps to prepare for the field goal.
Lions coach Dan Campbell emphasized the importance of Hooker experiencing both the successes and setbacks of the NFL during his most significant playing time of the preseason.
In the previous week’s exhibition loss to the New York Giants, Hooker recorded 36 passing yards and 34 rushing yards over two series before leaving the game due to a brain injury.
“One of the critical aspects of this is that he is making mistakes but learning to move on to the next play,” Campbell explained. “After a tough drive, he needs to mentally reset. He made several errors — more than a few. However, he returned for the final drive, put it behind him, and executed well. He moved the ball effectively and learned from his mistakes, which was fantastic. Each opportunity he has to take the reps and grow from them makes both him and the team better.”
A third-round selection from Tennessee in 2023, Hooker is positioning himself as Jared Goff’s backup as the Lions prepare to open their regular season next month.
He played behind veteran Nate Sudfeld for the second consecutive week. Although his accuracy and presence in the pocket still need improvement — he threw high on his first pass to Daurice Fountain on Saturday — he once again energized the offense with his playmaking skills.
“It’s all-encompassing,” Campbell remarked. “It’s about the overall experience. Some tend to overlook the necessity of getting the call from (offensive coordinator) Ben (Johnson), gathering the huddle, instilling a sense of urgency while maintaining composure and memory. He needs to articulate the play clearly to his team while ensuring urgency in his actions, and then be able to execute the play effectively. Achieving all those elements is substantial.”
Hooker expressed pride in his decision to slide during one of his runs on Saturday, a skill his mother and coaches have consistently emphasized since his injury against the Giants.
“I’m going to get a huge
“I’ll take a hug around the neck for that one,” he remarked.
However, he primarily felt pride in his contribution to the team’s victory.
“As long as we win, anything is worthwhile, that’s for certain,” he stated. “It’s all about consistently making progress and improving each day.”
