The second round of the Cup playoffs is set to commence. Two drivers will be changing rides starting this weekend, as NASCAR returns to the track that witnessed the closest finish in the series’ history earlier this year.
A lot is happening at the 1.5-mile Kansas Speedway as we approach Sunday’s race (3 p.m. ET on USA Network).
Here’s a look at the ups and downs for Cup teams heading to Kansas.
23XI Racing — Good news: Bubba Wallace achieved a third-place finish at Bristol, marking his sixth top-five and 11th top-10 finishes of the season, both career bests. … In the last five races at Kansas, 23XI Racing has secured victories three times, with wins from Kurt Busch, Tyler Reddick, and Wallace. … Among drivers at this season’s 1.5-mile tracks, Reddick has accumulated the most points, totaling 154. Bad news: Reddick has only earned 11 stage points during the playoffs, which is the lowest among the 12 remaining playoff drivers. … Additionally, he has 69 playoff points, also the lowest among the contenders.
Front Row Motorsports — Good news: Michael McDowell has finished 11th or better in the past two races this season. … He has started in the top 10 for the last two races at Kansas. Bad news: Todd Gilliland has not managed to start better than 25th in his five career Cup races at Kansas.
Hendrick Motorsports — Good news: Kyle Larson, who won at Bristol, leads the series with eight top-three finishes this season. … He also clinched a victory at Kansas in the latest Cup race, edging Chris Buescher by .001 seconds in the series’ closest finish ever. … Larson is the only driver to have won multiple times in the last eight Cup races at Kansas. … Alex Bowman led the first round of the playoffs with a total of 120 points, including a series-high of 41 stage points. … Chase Elliott finished third at Kansas in May. Bad news: William Byron has only secured two top-10 finishes in his last eight races.
