The Golden State Warriors are set to bring their talents to Brigham Young University-Hawaii.
According to a report by NBC Sports reporter Monte Pool, the NBA team will kick off its preseason with a training camp at BYU-Hawaii.
Following media day on September 30, the team will travel to Hawaii and engage in practice sessions on the campus from October 1 to October 4.
“(Head coach Steve) Kerr and the front office members are convinced that this four-day retreat at BYU-Hawaii, located on the scenic north shore of Oahu, will foster healthy camaraderie, benefiting everyone involved,” Poole noted.
Steph Curry’s Connection to BYU-Hawaii
The BYU-Hawaii campus, particularly the Cannon Activities Center, will be known to at least one member of the Warriors: Steph Curry.
Curry held a basketball camp at BYU-Hawaii during the summer of 2016, as reported by the university. Approximately 200 youngsters participated in the camp, where they learned from Curry and the Warriors’ youth basketball staff.
For three out of the four days, Curry was present, signing autographs, posing for photos with campers, and sharing insights about his workout routine and NBA experiences.
On one of those days, Curry delighted campers by knocking on their dorm doors and pretending to be a pizza delivery person. One young fan even fainted upon seeing Curry, a moment captured in a video shared by Hawaii News Now’s Stephanie Lum on Facebook.
“To be able to bring it here to Hawaii, to see our supporters down here who watch all of our games despite the time difference… coming down to share and embrace Dub Nation here in Hawaii is a truly enriching experience. I know there are a lot of kids here; around 90 kids from Hawaii. This opportunity might not be available to them elsewhere. So, it’s a special experience for the campers and their parents to enjoy the game of basketball,” Curry expressed, according to Lum.

Last year, the Utah Jazz conducted their training camp at the university. This marked the team’s first preseason visit to Hawaii since 2015, when they played two preseason matches at the University of Hawaii’s Stan Sheriff Center. It was also their third preseason trip to the state since 1993, as noted by the NBA.
The practices were not open to the public; however, the team welcomed fans to observe one post-practice scrimmage.
Jazz open practice scrimmages for fans in Hawaii to provide a glimpse of the 2023-24 team. “Up here on the North Shore at BYU Hawaii, they’ve been incredibly accommodating and exceptionally welcoming,” said Jazz head coach Will Hardy last year, as previously reported by the Deseret News.
He elaborated, “We aimed to return the favor and express our gratitude. … The atmosphere in the gym changes when fans are present, so allowing them in at the end of practice to watch the scrimmage gave our players a much-needed lift on the third day.”
