OXFORD — George McCabe, a resident of Oxford, returned home victorious from the 2023 Super Senior World Championships held in Palma Mallorca, Spain last month. The prestigious tournament, which took place from October 14th to 21st, showcased the remarkable skills of senior tennis players from around the globe.
McCabe, who had already secured the world champion titles in both singles and doubles in 2022, successfully defended his titles this year, solidifying his position as a dominant force in the sport.
“Approximately 400 players, ranging from 65 to 90 years of age, participated in this highly competitive world championship tournament,” McCabe revealed.
Retaining the Top World Ranking
McCabe’s exceptional performance allowed him to maintain his top world ranking in both singles and doubles within the 90 age group. This category featured 14 talented players hailing from Spain, Denmark, the United Kingdom, United States, Germany, and France.

The road to victory was not an easy one for McCabe. In the individual competition, his first match pitted him against a formidable opponent from Spain, described by McCabe as “experienced and playing exceptionally well.” Despite the challenge, McCabe emerged triumphant with a score of 6-1, 6-4. In the second round, he faced a player from the United Kingdom and secured a convincing victory of 6-1, 6-2. These wins set the stage for a championship match against Chuck Nelson from the United States, whom McCabe defeated with an impressive score of 6-1, 6-1.
Doubles Success with Andre Cruchet
In the doubles tournament, McCabe partnered with Andre Cruchet from France. Together, they showcased remarkable teamwork and skill, winning all three matches. Their opponents hailed from the United Kingdom, Germany, and Denmark, but McCabe and Cruchet emerged victorious, capturing the doubles title.
