BRIGHTON, Mass. — Typically, by December, NHL players find themselves too busy with their professional commitments to participate in public hockey sessions at the Burnsville Ice Center. However, during the last winter, Kasimir Kaskisuo made it a point to visit the rink in Burnsville, Minn., one or two times each week accompanied by John Schiavo, a player from the Southern Professional Hockey League, serving as his shooter, while paying an entry fee of $15.
As an unemployed goalie midway through the NHL season, this was the best way for Kaskisuo to maintain his readiness for any potential opportunities.
“Returning to that same rink this summer gave me PTSD,” Kaskisuo chuckled this week, recalling those December mornings filled with uncertainty. “I was just remembering what it felt like not knowing what was about to happen.”
He had received proposals from teams in Europe, but the 30-year-old — who resides in Lakeville, Minn., with his wife, Whitney, and their daughter, Fox — was keen on continuing his career in North America after spending the prior two seasons playing for Leksands in Sweden.
Thus, he opted to wait it out. He focused on training at his local gym and practiced stopping shots.
on December 18, he signed a professional tryout agreement with the Laval Rocket, the AHL affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens. Kaskisuo had secured a job at last.
One factor helping Kaskisuo remain patient was the existence of an alternate source of income.
Kaskisuo is also a YouTuber.
Back in camp
This marks Kaskisuo’s second tryout within as many seasons, and this time, he is with the Boston Bruins.
Just one week before the start of camp, the Bruins reached out to Jay Grossman, Kaskisuo’s agent, expressing their interest in him. On September 18, Kaskisuo finalized his PTO just in time for the first day of on-ice activities.
With his PTO, the only financial support guaranteed to Kaskisuo is the $137 per diem provided by the NHL to all players. The team is responsible for covering his hotel accommodations and meals at the rink.
The opportunity arose due to Jeremy Swayman, the Bruins’ primary goalie, not being under contract. By adding Kaskisuo to the roster, the Bruins achieved their goal of having six goalies present at the onset of camp. The duration of Kaskisuo’s stay is uncertain; the Bruins possess the option to release him at any moment.
“I’m aware that there’s a lot happening,” Kaskisuo commented, alluding to Swayman’s contract negotiations with the Bruins. “There are five other goalies as well. Each individual has a unique situation. I can’t get caught up in their circumstances; I must concentrate on my own performance. I recognize that any day could be my last day here. I’m keeping that perspective and appreciating this opportunity.”
Kaskisuo has made two previous NHL appearances: one with the Toronto Maple Leafs and another with the Nashville Predators.
Kaskisuo, a Finnish player, is well aware of the pressures associated not only with finding a job but also with life as a marginal goalie in the NHL. He has openly shared his experiences.
“I’m still unemployed,” Kaskisuo stated in a video released on his YouTube channel on October 8, 2023. “I remain unsigned and am a free agent without a team. It’s challenging at this point with North American training camps underway and still no updates. I’m just trying to be patient and find the right opportunity. It’s a difficult situation, and it’s not enjoyable.”
Kaskisuo’s journey on YouTube began during the 2020 NHL playoffs held in the Eastern Conference bubble, while he was with the Maple Leafs. Inspired by watching various NBA and NFL players create behind-the-scenes content, he was motivated to try it for himself. On July 27, 2020, he released his inaugural video.
“First time ‘vlogger’ so a lot to learn,” he noted in the caption.
This initial video has since garnered over 166,000 views.
Fast forward four years, and Kaskisuo has refined his process. He utilizes a Sony ZV-1 camera mounted on a Joby GorillaPod 1K tripod for most of his filming. For on-ice footage, he employs a GoPro HERO11 Black, which is attached to his goalie mask. His editing is done on a MacBook.
His YouTube channel also includes links to the video equipment he uses, along with a link to his merchandise, featuring hats, T-shirts, and hoodies emblazoned with his custom KK logo.
The content on Kaskisuo’s channel is diverse. Some videos offer glimpses into hotel life and team travel, while others feature analyses of his saves and the goals scored against him.
“My favorite videos to watch, when I’m browsing YouTube, are those showcasing different athletes and their daily routines. I’m looking forward to that new Amazon series,” Kaskisuo remarked, referring to an upcoming behind-the-scenes program. “I love all the football ones; they are incredibly motivating for me as both an athlete and a content creator.”

Kaskisuo boasts 64,800 subscribers. His growing audience has attracted companies that want him to try out their products on camera.
In several of his videos, he can be seen wearing the Sense Arena virtual reality headset, a tool used by some goalies to simulate puck-stopping scenarios. Subscribers have the opportunity to receive a $50 discount.

“It’s definitely helped during times, offseasons, and not having a job,” Kaskisuo said of his YouTube revenue, the amount of which he did not disclose. “It’s been a big help for the family.”
In his most recent video, in which he explains the contents of his goalie bag, Kaskisuo is wearing a New York Yankees hat. On Tuesday after practice, he had a Boston Red Sox hat on.
“The day I signed, I figured I couldn’t wear that here,” Kaskisuo said of his previous lid. “So I had to go upgrade it.”

Joonas Korpisalo and Brandon Bussi are atop the depth chart while Swayman is unsigned. Michael DiPietro, the No. 3 goalie, is on a one-year, two-way NHL deal. Ryan Bischel and Nolan Maier are in the mix for the AHL Providence and ECHL Maine affiliates.
Bussi started the preseason opener. Korpisalo was in net for the second game. DiPietro backed up both times.
Where Kaskisuo fits is uncertain. By now, he is used to uncertainty. He is a regular visitor to PuckPedia, where he studies organizational goalie rankings and contracts.
“July starts, and there’s only a couple goalies here and there signing,” Kaskisuo said. “You start to look at the depth charts. Then asking about these teams and sending a list to my agent. My agent’s making a list. You start getting back a lot of noes. Spots are filled up. Obviously when camps are right around the corner, then it’s not fun anymore. But the day before camp, to get the call, I didn’t miss anything. So that was good.”
Kaskisuo has not posted to his channel since signing with the Bruins. For now, he is focusing on his on-ice job. Content creation, however, is not going away.
“No,” Kaskisuo said when asked if he considered himself a YouTuber. “Well, maybe. Yeah, I guess. A lot of people, when they recognize me, say they love my videos and not like, ‘You’re a great goalie,’ or anything like that. So I’m trying to change that a little bit. But at least I’m getting recognized. I feel like the reach is pretty big in the hockey community.”
