LAS VEGAS ⁣– Drew Timme ⁢compared his ⁤inaugural season as ⁢a professional basketball player with the Wisconsin Herd, ⁤a G League affiliate of⁢ the ​Milwaukee Bucks,⁣ to his⁤ freshman year‌ at Gonzaga.

Both experiences included early challenges and important lessons; however,‌ by mid-season, Timme noticed that things were​ beginning to slow down around him. He began playing with greater confidence and less hesitation. ​Each‍ game brought new improvements for him.

In his eighth ‌appearance ‍during the G League Showcase Cup—a⁣ month-long tournament that occurs before the regular season—Timme achieved a remarkable⁣ 30-point, 10-rebound double-double ‍against the‌ Windy City Bulls, successfully making 11 of ⁢12 shots from the field. He concluded the Showcase Cup with another double-double comprising 16 points and​ 15 rebounds while averaging 9.7 points and 5.8 ‍rebounds in​ just ​over ‍21 minutes ​per game with an impressive shooting percentage of 38%‍ from beyond the arc.

The NBA ⁤franchise located just ‌90 miles away in Milwaukee took notice of Timme’s consistent production.​ There had been discussions about offering him a series ​of ten-day contracts with the Bucks; however, those discussions did not progress⁢ beyond initial stages.

During a January 26 matchup ​against the Delaware Blue Coats, Timme was on ‌course⁣ for‍ what⁣ could have been his third G​ League double-double after accumulating eight points and eight rebounds.⁢ While setting up ⁣to screen ⁢for a play, he suffered⁤ a⁤ low-impact hit that‌ sent him falling ⁣hard onto the⁤ court ⁣floor where an awkward angle caused his left foot to strike it violently.

Pain radiated through ⁣his foot‍ as⁤ he ⁤smashed his shoe against the ground—his usual method for dealing with‌ lower body discomforts—as detailed in a ‍CBS Sports feature from earlier in 2023.

During the California Classic, Timme played⁣ in three games, averaging 9.7⁤ points, 7.0 rebounds, and 1.3 steals in 23.1 minutes per game. His scoring performance improved during his time in Vegas, where he averaged 11.4 points along with⁤ 4.4 rebounds⁤ and 1.3 assists.

“Drew brings a remarkably professional ‌mindset to the game,” said⁣ Sacramento guard Mason Jones. “When you drive towards the basket, you know he’ll be there for ⁣support — pushing for‌ shots and playing hard on defense while remembering key plays.”

Timme recorded a Summer League-high of 19 points along ‌with five rebounds and ​four assists in a matchup against the Utah Jazz, receiving accolades from ‌ESPN color commentator PJ Carlesimo, who likened his playmaking skills as a big man to those of former Sacramento legend Vlade Divac.

“I think it’s all‍ about⁣ maximizing my strengths,” Timme stated. “Clearly, I won’t be known as a top shot blocker; however, I believe that ⁢my basketball IQ and ‍ability⁣ to create opportunities for others distinguish me from⁢ others in this league. So focusing on that—while minimizing turnovers and maintaining efficiency—is going to help me stand out most.”

While Timme appreciated being compared to Divac, he holds more admiration for⁢ another Gonzaga alumnus currently solidifying his role in Sacramento’s frontcourt.

“Domantas Sabonis ⁤is‍ essentially the ideal ​model of what every Gonzaga big should aspire to be,” Timme remarked about‍ Sabonis’s playstyle: strong-minded yet smart—traits ‍he strives hard to emulate.“Getting⁤ anywhere ⁢near Sabonis’ accomplishments ‍would truly be something special considering what an incredible player he⁣ is.”

This ⁢past Summer League was when Timme really struck up rapport with Sacramento’s coaching ‌staff​ thanks mainly to ‌another connection from⁤ Gonzaga.

The team’s new assistant coach Riccardo Fois previously served as Gonzaga’s director of analytics; although Fois did not directly coach Timme⁤ at Spokane College ​nor share any experiences ‍there⁢ together since their timelines didn’t align—Fois was ‌involved during Timmes’ recruitment efforts—and‍ they had plentiful discussions about tactics last month while they​ were both enjoying Las Vegas.

“Delving into how Fois perceives‌ different aspects of gameplay has ⁣proven beneficial,”⁤ said‌ Timme who ​also noted that “Fois is friends with Sabonis.”

This rookie season may have been brief but provided valuable insights ​into adjusting life within professional basketball settings.

A ⁣crucial realization? There tends far more downtime than most people might presume.
