After months of eager anticipation and preparation, former child star Frankie Muniz, who dreams of becoming a professional stock car driver, is set to fulfill his aspiration once more. He will return to Kansas Speedway to participate in his second NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race, driving the No. 22 for Reaume Brothers Racing.
Muniz aims to gain crucial track experience and complete all 134 laps of the Kubota Tractor 200, marking his fourth start in the NASCAR national series—all of which have occurred this season. Following a couple of DNFs in the NASCAR Xfinity Series with Emerling-Gase Motorsports at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway and Phoenix Raceway to kick off the year, the 38-year-old didn’t receive another chance until his Truck Series debut on June 28 at Nashville (Tenn.) Superspeedway, where he faced an overheating issue, ending up in 31st place.
Despite his challenges in achieving consistency and stability in 2024, there is a silver lining: Muniz has previously logged laps at Kansas. During his full-time campaign in the ARCA Menards Series last year, he managed to secure one of his 11 top-10 finishes at the 1.5-mile track, achieving eighth place.
Though he has some experience at Kansas, Muniz is managing his expectations for his second Truck Series start, fully recognizing the competitive disparities and distinctions between the two racing formats.
“Kansas is one of my favorite tracks,” Muniz shared with Kickin’ the Tires. “Last year, it was the fourth race of my NASCAR racing career. I qualified sixth, just a tenth behind Jesse Love, and finished eighth. So, looking at that, I see, ‘Okay, he’s one of the best, and I was pretty close.’ In the fall, we were running around the same position—fifth or sixth—but I blew a tire right before the stage break and hit the wall pretty hard. Otherwise, (we) would have done well there.”
“I feel good, but the Truck Series is an entirely different challenge. The racing style, drafting—everything is dissimilar. While I want to be competitive and perform my best, I’m viewing this as a learning experience. Everything we’re doing now is enhancing my skills for the future.”
In between his sporadic starts this season, Muniz has kept himself busy by collaborating closely with Ford Performance to sharpen his skills. To stay prepared for his upcoming NASCAR opportunities, he frequently traveled to Charlotte, N.C., where he logged additional laps in the simulator, along with making a start in ARCA at Michigan International Speedway, where he both started and finished 12th back in August.
Originally, Muniz was scheduled to race in the Truck Series at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway last weekend. However, the Scottsdale, Ariz. native opted to exchange that start for the series finale at his home track, Phoenix Raceway. In addition to his Kansas start this weekend, he will also compete at Homestead-Miami Speedway on October 26.
While nothing has been formally announced, Muniz has hinted several times at a greater racing presence in 2025. For now, he is focused on maximizing his limited opportunities as the year concludes, starting with the Kubota Tractor 200 at Kansas Speedway on Friday, Sept. 27, at 8:30 p.m. ET, on Fox Sports 1, the Motor Racing Network, and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, channel 90.
“I’m eager to get out there,” Muniz stated. “Just learning about racecraft throughout the entire event—considering strategies regarding tires, fuel, and pit stops… there are numerous aspects I’m still discovering for the first time. That’s really my goal for these last three races this year: to mesh well with the team and my engineers, mastering pit stops, and absorbing all that knowledge so I’ll be ready when we arrive at Daytona next year.”
