Former NFL Player D.J. Hayden Among Six Killed in Tragic Car Accident
Authorities Investigate High-Speed Collision
Houston, TX – Former NFL cornerback D.J. Hayden was tragically killed in a devastating automobile accident on Saturday morning, according to the Houston Police Department. The incident, which claimed the lives of six individuals, occurred when a Chrysler 300, traveling at a high rate of speed, ran a red light and collided with an Acura SUV.
The Houston Police Department received a distress call around 2 a.m. reporting the traffic accident involving the two vehicles. Upon arrival, authorities discovered four individuals deceased at the scene, while four others were rushed to a local hospital. Unfortunately, two of the injured victims succumbed to their injuries after being transported to the hospital. Among the fatalities were five males, including one individual believed to be homeless, and one female. The police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident, including determining the driver of the SUV.
A Devastating Loss for the University of Houston Community
The tragic accident also claimed the lives of two of D.J. Hayden’s former University of Houston teammates, cornerback Zach McMillan and offensive lineman Ralph Oragwu. However, cornerback Jeffrey Lewis, another teammate involved in the crash, is currently recovering from his injuries.
The University of Houston’s athletic department expressed their profound grief in a statement, saying, “Our entire community is heartbroken over the tragic passing of former Football student-athletes D.J. A Remarkable Career Cut Short
D.J. Hayden, who was only 33 years old, had a promising career in the NFL. Despite suffering a life-threatening heart injury during his 2012 season at the University of Houston, Hayden was selected in the first round of the 2013 NFL draft by the Oakland Raiders. He went on to play eight seasons in the league, spending time with the Detroit Lions, Washington, and the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Throughout his NFL career, Hayden showcased his skills with 4.5 sacks, 4 interceptions, and 46 pass breakups. His determination and resilience were evident, as he overcame a potentially career-ending injury to make a significant impact on the field.
