On Tuesday night, former Jets running back Kevin Long passed away, as reported by the University of South Carolina, his​ alma mater, in‌ a statement.

He was 69 years old.

The cause‍ of death has not been disclosed.

A native of Clinton, S.C., Long made⁣ history with the Gamecocks when he rushed for 1,133 yards in‌ 1975, becoming the first ⁤player in the program’s history to surpass the 1,000-yard mark.

Throughout his remarkable career at South Carolina (1973-76), Long accumulated 2,372 rushing yards, placing him 10th on the all-time list for ‍the school.

In⁤ the seventh round of the 1977 NFL Draft, the Jets selected him, allowing ⁤him to achieve his dream of playing professional football.

In 2020, Long reminisced fondly about his time with the Jets in an interview with the team’s website.

“I always dreamed of playing in the NFL. I wasn’t certain I’d​ get ‌drafted, and​ when I did, New York was the perfect destination. That was my ​first time there, and I was terrified,” he said. “As we flew over the​ city heading to LaGuardia [Airport], I was just completely amazed. My hometown, Clinton, South Carolina, had ​a population of around ‌20,000 at that‍ time.”
