VOORHEES, N.J. — ⁤On Monday, Guy Gaudreau, who is the father of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, participated in a training-camp skate for the Philadelphia Flyers after receiving an invitation from Coach John⁢ Tortorella.

At 67 years old, Guy is a former hockey coach‌ at⁢ the nearby ‍Hollydell Ice Arena and Gloucester Catholic High School, where he coached his two sons, tragically killed in a car accident on August 29.

Having attended the funeral for the Gaudreau brothers, Tortorella reached ⁤out to Guy via phone ‌and met him ⁢in person for the first time on Monday.

“I thought it was perfect⁤ to have him join us,” Tortorella stated. “He was ⁣a bit hesitant initially, and ‌we let him ‍come at⁢ his own pace. I believe it turned‍ out really well today.”

Tortorella handed Guy the team’s training-camp schedule and⁣ expressed hope that he would come back again in the future.

“We’ll see if⁤ he can make it out here a couple more times and become a part ‌of this. I want him to be involved. He’s a‌ coach, and having ⁣him here was fantastic; we’ll see how it unfolds,” Tortorella said.

Throughout much of the two practice sessions, Guy ⁣observed from the boards. However, as the skate wrapped up, he stood at center ice, tapping ⁢his stick and urging the players to finish strong during their laps.

“He was teasing me for yelling at⁢ the players to skate harder,” Tortorella mentioned.‌ “He said, ‘You⁣ only have three lines out here; how much harder can they go?’ So, he’s definitely paying attention.”

After each skate, players from the Flyers extended their hands to Guy in‌ gratitude before heading to the locker room.

“It’s truly tragic what happened. It just breaks your⁣ heart,”⁣ remarked Philadelphia defenseman Nick Seeler. “Having Mr. Gaudreau‍ with us around the players—he’s a coach himself. It’s beneficial for him to be around‍ the team and the coaching atmosphere; I hope this helps in some ‌way for him.”

Defenseman Travis Sanheim added, “Whatever we can do to support⁣ him through this, I hope today was positive for him as well. He has contributed a great deal to this area and the community.”

The Flyers are set to play their second preseason game on Monday night in Montreal. Tortorella has invited Guy to attend, but Guy feels it might be too much for him‍ right ⁢now. “He’s going to head back home, and we’ll chat next ‌week,” said Tortorella.
