Fargo Park District Makes Changes to Edgewood Golf Course Leadership
The Fargo park District is seeking a new leader for Edgewood Golf Course operations, following the retirement of PGA professional Greg McCullough. While the position is now titled “Golf Manager,” the district emphasizes that a PGA professional would likely be the most qualified candidate.
The change in title aims to attract a broader range of applicants, according to Fargo Park District Executive Director Susan Faus and Director of Golf Rocky Papachek. “The likelihood of the person who is most qualified for the job would probably be a PGA golf professional,” said Papachek. “If the person who is selected has that title, they’ll promote themselves as a PGA professional.”
The salary for the Edgewood position and upcoming positions at Rose Creek and Osgood golf courses will be comparable to what professionals in the area earn. Current head pros matt Cook at Rose Creek and Chris Larson at Osgood will retain their positions this season, but the Park District will take over golf shop operations at both courses next year.
“It will be their choice whether or not they decide to stay and are willing to work under our current model,” Papachek said. “It’s not us eliminating their position.” The district hopes both pros will stay on.
Revenue from the golf shops is expected to be reinvested into the courses and golf programs. “This is not a decision where we’re looking at cutting costs necessarily,” Faus said. “What we’re wanting to do is optimize revenue opportunities.”
Among other changes, the park district will hire a designated teaching professional at Edgewood to address high demand for lessons. Popular Edgewood Men’s Club, ladies leagues, and junior programs will continue under the new model.
Faus said the Park District has been reviewing all its operations, not just golf.Discussions for an updated business model for golf have been ongoing for about a year and a half. “This isn’t a decision that was a quick rush,” she said. “It was something we’ve been talking about for a while.”
